Sorry but they really did land on the moon.

There was a very good documentary a while back and the evidence for was very overwhelming.

What people seem to forget is that it was during the cold war and the Russians were watching every step. if they had had the slightest wiff of a fake they would have blown the lid.

Does this thread have anything to do with the fact that someone on here saw Capricorn One on the box last week?

I can't be bothered to list all the counter claims to all the theory claims, go to;
www.clavius.org
Or look up Moon Landings on Wikipedia. They list them all there. Every "claim" has a "counter-claim". In fact some counter-claims have counter-counter-claims. Magoo's point about the Soviet Union is now countered by theorists claiming that the USA bribed the Soviets with grain shipments. Of course, no evidence actually exists of a huge high level government agreement at the height of the cold war but evidence is irrelevant in a conspiracy theory.

Conspiracy Theories fascinate me. They are the latest expression of our story-telling heritage. For centuries we have told each other stories of how we are controlled and manipulated by "higher powers", from the ancient Greek and Roman Gods, through Christianity before we arrive at the conspiracy theory. The modern world seems out of keeping with this idea of control, so we created the "Techno-myth".

The "Techno-myth" is prevalent throughout modern culture. Alien landings, the AIDS virus being created by the CIA, the perpetual motion machine, all of these are "Techno-myths" and they infiltrated into every part of our lifes. Films, books, television shows have all be made about those topics, the Roswell Landings are now an established part of our culture.

For me, conspiracy theories are part of our security blanket against the World. So many things happen to us that we cannot readily explain, we are uncomfortable at the idea of not being in control. The "assasination" of Diana is a good example of this. Some of us cannot accept that such a well-known and public figure could be killed in a simple road accident. She had become such a part of modern culture that being killed by a drunk driver seemed somehow inadequate for such a figure. It seemed so senseless. So we create the story of how she was murdered by all-powerful forces, a huge conspiracy involving intelligence agents, religion and the Royal Family. This story seems much more fitting to a person of such stature, it suits our image of Diana much more than a normal traffic accident. The theory elevates her into an even more important figure. We are reassured by the story because it seems to bring meaning into the world. She died for a reason, her death had purpose.

The Moon landings are a pivotal moment in our history, the point at which we escaped the confines of our planet and moved into a whole new realm. We have lived in a room for our whole existence and when the space flights began we opened the door and started to see how big everything else is. That is a scary thought, it makes some of us uncomfortable. The thought that it might not have happened reassures us, it brings us back to Earth so to speak. It is hard for us to comprehend the science behind space travel, the thought of what is out there upsets us. It is much easier to say it didn't happen than it is trying to learn how it happened. The moon-landing theory acts as our security blanket.

The moon-landing theories are different from most conspiracy theories in that they are falsifiable. That means that actual evidence must exist that tells us if man did or did not go to the moon. Most conspiracy theories are not falsifiable. There is no way you can ever disprove a normal conspiracy theory. Even if evidence is produced that disproves the theory you simply surmise that the forces behind the conspiracy have invented the evidence. In the case of the moon landings evidence was left behind. It's all up there on the moon. If China ever sends a manned space flight to the moon we might be able to see if it is true or not. Unless the theorists claim that China is involved in the conspiracy as well.

The best conspiracy is one involving only one person. Every time you introduce someone else into the conspiracy you increase the chance of it being exposed or failing. The moon-landing conspiracy, like the JFK assasination plots and the Alien landing theories, involves hundreds, if not thousands, of people. All of these people have kept silent about the theory and all of them were succesful in their appointed roles. The chances of that actually happening are pretty remote. If we say that ALL the moon-landings were faked then the amount of people involved becomes even larger, and there must still be people working on the conspiracy right now in order for it to still be covered up. It begs the question of why did they do Apollo missions 12 through to 17? You might be able to trick the World once but to do it SEVEN times is just inviting trouble. What was the purpose of faking Apollo 16? What did the people behind the conspiracy gain through that faked mission?

It's interesting that this theory is still popular. In fact it only gained it's popularity after the release of "Capricorn One", a film about a faked mission to Mars. Alien theories are nowhere near as popular as they were in the nineties, sightings are well down, abductions no longer seem to be happening. This can be traced back to September 11th. After the attacks that day the conspiracy theories surrounding them became massively popular, dwarfing the alien rumours which somehow seemed out of place in this new world. Any theory involving evil government manipulation became very popular, which may be why the moon landing theory is still popular. It fits in with our current mis-trust of governments, the abuse of power and the increasingly corporate world that we live in.

The world is a scary place and despite all our technological advances we still feel powerless. We are led by people we do not trust yet we never seem capable of shaking them off. We seem to be incapable of empowering ourselves. So we create the conspiracy theory as a way of explaining this to ourselves. We can never gain control because there is always a nefarious group out there which controls us, Bilderberg, shape shifting lizards, what have you. Conspiracy theories scare us, yet at the same time they comfort us. Things always happen for a reason according to the theories. Nothing ever happens by chance, everything is planned. People never make mistakes, everything that "they" want to happen will happen.

The biggest conspiracy of them all is happening all around us. The exploitation of the majority for the benefit of the minority is all around us. That is the biggest crime being commited, yet the conspiracy theories sidetrack us from this. They keep us entertained and amused, but they don't help solve anything.

the thing that gets me about conspiracy theorists (at least the ones that conjure up and perpetuate the stories) is they are obviously very intelligent people. They are able to engage in labourious research and weave such complicated webs of plot and counter plot.

It seems strange therfore that they are unable to see the simple flaws in their case, and fail to answer basic critisim of the conspiracy. For example, if you wanted to assasinate Diana, why do it in France where you have little or no control over the judicary (sp?), police, witnesses etc, when you could have simply engineered an "accident" on a country lane at 2:30 in the morning on a country lane in Berkshire?

Given their ingelligence, i wish they would put their time to something far more productive and useful to society, leaving the story telling to the novellist and movie makers.

They could also point hubble and euro telescopes at the moon to look at all the crap the yanks left behind.

we should build a giant catapult and fire bradders up there to clean it all up.

The hubble isn't powerful enough (see here) but we don't even need to go to the trouble

This can be done by just about anyone. Ok, maybe not everyone, but plenty have done it and it proves men have been up there.
Basically all you do is buy a laser and a detector and a light collecting mirror. Then you fire it at a precise point on the moon. There is a reflecting prism there that acts like a mirror, placed by Apollo astronauts. Now if there was nothing at that point but rock that would be the last you would see of your laser. But time and time again scientist have been getting their laser reflected back. Indeed, they have done a number of experiments using these reflectors. This experiment has provided a very accurate method of measuring the distance to the moon. Due to these measurements we can now tell that the moon is actually steadily receding from the Earth.

I hope there are a lot of ironical posts on this thread. If you really believe the moon landings were faked and the whole thing is a conspiracy with the Soviets and perhaps the Chinese involved as well then you are very very stupid. Worse you choose not to believe the evidence in front of you.

Who still believes in alien abductions? I always found it strange that aliens only ever abducted hick Americans who "dang saw it with their own two eyes". Strangley though since the advent of the camcorder no one has actually manage to film any aliens, even though they're quite happy to have their cameras running all day filming Granny digging the garden in the offchance she'll stick the fork in her foot. Oh I forgot, the CIA/FBI/KGB/Mossad/Interpol/Al Queda cartel have supressed all knowledge of aliens haven't they?
