the Golden years were 1976-1983-

The future could hold many things and perhaps the best is yet to come-

I'm the same age as you but remember the cup final run as the best time to be supporting Brighton. That game v Weds at Highbury was amazing

The Semi-final was the greatest ever game we have won by a country mile, it was awesome and just so glad it happened when it did

We were all younger with bigger lungs but mainly we were able to group together not possible at the amex NOT SURE THE GOLDSTONE WOULD BE GREAT AT MY AGE,LOVE THE COMFORT OF THE AMEX

It's impossible to claim any era as better than this one - and my Albion days began in 1958. True, we've had four seasons in the top division, seen Ward and Lawrenson in the stripes, and played Man U at Wembley when the FA Cup really meant something right across the world.

The great players, and big crowds will come and go. But this fantastic stadium, bankrolled by a fan from an Albion dynasty, is ours, here to stay for the next 100 years. Ask fans of almost any other club - especially those with dodgy, know-nothing foreign owners - whether they'd swap their situation for ours.

Before I get totally slated I'm a 39 year old who was too young to enjoy our time in the first division & the 83 cup final.

I have supported the Albion all my life & cannot remember times like this.
Since we moved into our fantastic new stadium we have increased our fanbase from 7000 to 26000.
Every game we play we believe we can win.
In the space of 18 months we have played

Liverpool x2
Newcastle x2
Sunderland
Arsenal/Swansea

If you read the threads on NSC most of them are negative about what the club are doing wrong or what they are unhappy about & I am as guilty of that as anybody.

Should we not just enjoy being a Brighton fan after everything we have been through over the last 20 years.

Broadly agree, but IF we lose today people are entitled to come on here and say "That was shit! Barnes/CMS/Dobbie/whoever is crap! Poyet has really got to sort it out!" You can have those sentiments and still at the same time think that this is the best era to be a Brighton fan (and on balance I think it is and I've been watching Brighton since 1965), they are not mutually exclusive attitudes.

1995-97 was the best ever, supporting the Albion meant more than going to a match and moaning about the price to get in or whether there was no plan B. Went to every match not knowing if it was the last and fighting to make sure we actually had a team to support and when it was all over and we won that was more important than any match we won on the pitch.

Think the fanbase has always been there, just not the facilities to accomodate it! Acutally, I would hope the fanbase is in fact greater than 26,000!!


As for the best years, I was lucky to start watching the Albion in 1975/76 for 3 or 4 games and then from 76/77 have been to virtually every home game and about 70 different away grounds. For me, 76 to 83 was the best. First the two promotions and even when we struggled in the First Division, apart from Mike Bailey's period, we did try and play exciting football. And finally the Cup run in which I was fortunate to only miss the Newcastle away game. Great times probably culminating in singing Abide With Me at Wembley and realising we were actually in the final.

Great post. Yes we are in the best of times and there is more to come.I feel that the Bloom Gus partnership is going to deliver and with the Amex finished we are about to see some fantastic times. The investment in the development squad and training ground is creating a momentum that will be fantastic to see and Watching the story unfold is going to be fab. Only reservation is the fear of ticket prices becoming an issue

Only time will tell but at the moment supporting the Albion is getting as good as it was for me when I first went to the Albion 74-75 season right up to 83 those 9 years were a golden era of promotion after promotion then our only stint ever in league 1 (prem) and onto the cup final at wembley

This absolutely. I love the Amex, but it doesn't come close for me to those days

For me,The Glory Years of the mid to late 1970's were the best,making our way from the old Division 3 to Division 1 in real style,with exciting football virtually every week.Add the cup year of 1983 and the fantastic atmosphere of the Highbury semi-final and that will do me!

I was fortunate enough to have lived through our golden age 1975 - 1983. However for those of you who are too young to have seen it remember I now wake up with a bad back and countless aches and you will see more of our forthcoming golden age than me!

Good original post. In terms of the last 20 years, things are far better for you. You still haven't reached times as good as 1977 to 1983 though.

Seems to me that when things are going well, loads of fans moan 'cos they want them to be still better.

These things often go in cycles. Best to enjoy success when it comes for what it is and make the most of it. You never know what tomorrow will bring so never assume anything.

I am loving the Gus years but not so involved due to location. However the Mullery Division 3 to division 2 years in the late 70s were brilliant.
No internet so not so much criticism from fans. Great atmosphere at the grounds home and away.
