Skateboards with Gull wing trucks and alligator wheels.

Having to pay to get on the Palace pier.

The West pier, boring maybe, but it was there.

Fag and milk vending machines outside shops.

Silk Albion scarves hanging from your wrists thinking you were well 'ard.

Dunlop green flash.

The glass animal man.

Dogs roaming freely around the streets.

Chatting up 15 year old girls without being arrested.

I think i had Independent stage 3's or something-loved skate boarding, even managed to knock a tooth out on a quarter pipe down the level once.

I used to work there in the early 80's
Loved their stuff. Bought a check greatcoat there in 1972 when they were de rigeur for a young bank clerk, with my second paycheck. Cost about half a month's pay in the Autumn and someone broke in to my first car in the Spring and stole it with all my cassettes!

Still wear a current pair of Green Flash.

Top rank suite on a Tuesday

That was the night for young new bands touring the Top Rank circuit.
Pat Travers, Heavy Metal Kids, Scorpions, UFO, Racing Cars, Ultravox (with John Foxx), AC/DC, The Pirates with Mick Green, Ducks Deluxe etc..... and for 50 pence every week.

I believe The Dome gigs were around £3.50 by then - which is still small change to us now, but 7 times the cost of a Top Rank Tuesday

The cafe at the bottom of Churchill square which I cant remember the name of but it began with an S.
And- (He probably deserves his own thread in honour)- The ten p man. For the younger ones out there the ten p man was legendary for his appearances around the East street area of Brighton. He was a homeless man who would stop you and ask for 10p. It was always this amount and what he did with all his 10ps was anyones guess. I seem to remember he had a beard. When I was at Brighton Uni someone started a comic strip about him- such was his high status in the 80's around Brighton. If only he had known.

1947 to1953......The filming of the original 'Brighton Rock' at the racecourse...my Dad had a part of the crowd when Pinky was slashed. Teddy boys(kept my suit down at my mates as my Dad would've killed me if he knew I dressed like that) The coffee bar in Queens road, can't remember the name but had an early American Jukebox with 'Blue Suede shoes,' Elvis and Rock around the Clock and Buddy Holly cost 3p piece for a play, they were the kings of music then. Yes the Glass Animal man was still on the Palace pier then.

You may also remember 'Bus Man' who would spend the day walking up and down Western Road saluting any bus that would come by. He always had a huge grin on his face and occassionally shouted out at the drivers. Grey haired. Always wore a jacket. Bus drivers seemed to know him.
