Not an Americanism. Here it's at least partially a baseball/football (or handegg) distinction, based on the shapes of the venues.
Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, for baseball. But even then, it wasn't consistent.
Even then, Fenway replaced the Huntington Avenue Ground in 1914.
Harvard Stadium, Chicago Soldiers' Field, and the Los Angeles Coliseum all have the same shape, and date from the same era.
Football grounds in Germany have been Stadion since forever, and Stade in France. Also cf Wembley.
Put it down to globalization.
