The only way we’re going to beat any of the “Big Six”, that’s Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal left in this season’s fixtures, is to ensure that we score at least four goals in each of those fixtures. That way we might win 2-0 or 2-1. With the standard of officiating very much in favour for the “elite” we know we’ll have at least two goals chalked off and a penalty or two also ruled out.

The consolation though is the club will receive numerous letters from PGMOL saying “sorry - we got it wrong”. These will be framed and displayed in the directors board room, however there may not be enough space left on the wall to show all of them.

What we need to do is petition the EPL and referees association to ensure that the rules are made clear (the way some are written is ambiguous), the rules are understood and the rules are applied. This will require proper use of VAR, not the sort of VAR-lite we got yesterday. And the notion that the judgement of the referee is king has to change. No, the f***ing rules should be king and referees are merely servants of the rules.

And when 'judgment' clearly changes its operational rubric during a game the officials should be bollocked, fined or sacked.
