But how does it make sense? Let's say revenues for a club are $20m (I've no idea on figures in the MSL, these are for example) and the salary cap means they can't spend more than $12m. If they then get a superstar player for $8m, they're spending their entire revenue on player salaries. How has the salary cap helped that team not overspend?
It's not done from the point of view of stopping clubs paying more than they can afford, it's only done to prevent the kind of situation you now have in the Prem where a few teams have got so rich they are guaranteed to be in the top four or five.
FYI, the salary cap is only $2.55mill this season. Also, some of the costs for designated players are actually paid by the League, not the club, as I think happened in Beckham's case. Each team is allowed two designated players but can pay the league an extra $250,000 for the right to sign a third, and that money is distributed to all the teams with 2 or fewer designated players.
