This was mine … one of my mum’s favs. I still have my parents old 7” vinyl collection - mostly late ‘50s and ‘60s.

You lucky beggar. My parents threw their meagre collection of about 40 45's away and claimed no knowledge of what happened to them. I put together a spreadsheet of all the ones I could remember by going through The Guiness Book of Hit Singles and reckon I got most of them, then lost access to the spreadsheet on my laptop and never recovered it. I keep meaning to rebuild it.

It was fun going through the various posts on here and looking to see if I had any of the records mentioned. There were a good few … including some early ‘60s Beatles.

I doubt there was a pop chart in the middle of World War 2 when I was born. I think people had other things to think about.
What was the date? Believe it or not, some charts existed of songs and sheet music.

6th June 1944:
Number 1 Berlin Or Bust — Sam Browne and the Six Swingers

I think 'swingers' meant something else back in the day!

I know this one without having to look. "Imagine" by John Lennon. If I'd been born two days later, it would have been "Shaddap You Face" by Joe Dolce.
But should have been Ultravox and 'Vienna' probably the best selling number 2 ever.

I love this thread, not least because I can pinpoint the year and month for most in the late 70s/early 80s. When I look at the charts for a lot of that I recognise most of the top 30. Astonishing really. I couldn't name a number 1 from the last 5 years.

It was Woman by John Lennon that kept Vienna off top spot for a week before Shaddap You Face went to no.1 for the next three weeks.

Imagine had been at no.1 for a few weeks before Woman took over for a couple. I only know this as I literally just happened to be reading about it after watching a clip of Father Ted where he suggests he'd been at seminary with the guy who recorded Vienna.
