I managed to get time off work for the whole of the World Cup in 1990, mind you I did have to spend a couple of days in hospital and have an operation to qualify, it was pretty scary for a bit but the football was enjoyable.

It wasn't really self mutilation, more a bang to the head, but the football was good...spent the majority of my time in a lovely little bar in Belgium or back at my olds in Sussex when the doc cleared me to fly...don't think I missed a game on the box.

5.5 days in Germany for the World Cup , went in on the Fri am and made such a scene at work the boss actually sent me home ill. By 3pm I was on the ferry heading world cup way. Returned to work a week monday and nothing really questioned about it. Problem was I couldnt tell anyone I went to the World cup......which still to this day nearly drops me in it

I'm exactly the same, though I had a fantastic sickie a few years back, which was somebody else's sickie rather than mine.....

I had travelled down to Eastbourne from Southampton with a workmate to do a job for three days. The second morning [Wednesday] he cries off sick, and the job is such that you need two people working for H&S, so my boss just said, have the day off, and crack on tomorrow.

It was an absolutely fantastic July day, and being a Sussex boy, I made a couple of calls and got myself a game with my old cricket team 'Mid-Sussex', playing at Horsted Keynes.

Anyone who knows the Horsted Keynes ground can explain, that a pub forms part of the boundary, which is a bonus.

Anyway, I had a brilliant day in the sunshine, took five wickets, and generally had a ball, on full pay.

The cherry on the top, was that when I bought my jug for my five-for, the barman gave me a catch-all reciept, which just said 'food and drink' which I was able to put through my expenses.

I was actually in hospital for the whole of the 2002 World Cup so got to see every match & as luck (?) would have it, I was again in hospital in London for the Ashes when we beat the Aussie. Just as well my surgeon had opeated on me before the opening game as he was Australian and we did take the piss. Whilst I was genuinely ill with cancer, I now have the all clear as such, but my son did on more than one occasion tell his teachers that the reason he was behind with his work was because I had cancer; although at that time I was in remission. Shame on him!:lolol:

I don't remember any of it but when I disclocated my shoulder, the bloody hospital gave me a pethadine OD and I slept for 3 days...oblivious to the panic of my family and hospital and work and EVERYONE....

At least I would have liked to have had some enjoyment of it....

Hither (sometimes Thither)
I was off for a day following the Selfridges warehouse Christmas Party around 8 years ago. I had drunk and snorted and danced the evening embarassingly away somewhere in central London, having a Wales of a time. I don't remember leaving, but i do remember waking up walking on a road in south-east London, my shoes mysteriously missing from my chopped socky feet.
I know i have said this before on here, so shan't go on much longer, but i had to phone in sick when i finally found my way home some 6 hours later. By this time i had found my larynx again and the bumps on my head i'd become aware of. I told them i had a terrible feeling inside. This was true. I had a worse one going to the shoeshop with no shoes on saying very clearly that i needed some.

heh
sorry, i just remembered being in a coma got me a bit of time off. I reckon i could have still done the unskilled job i currently do without consciousness, answering phones with beeps and screams and an obscurely-smiling face.

My brother works for BA and was warned about being late and on final verbal warning was late and blamed it on driving up the M4 and the door of a lorry infront of him opened and loads of football fell out and blocked the motorway for hours.

At the time the BA advert showed the doors of a lorry opening and loads of foootballs falling onto the motorway.

Wasn't really a sickie, but I was late for work once and told the personnel manager it was because I got stuck behind a blind person.

It was true... I made the mistake of following them under some scaffolding (the type with boards on either side)... the blind guy was walking so slowly and I couldn't get around him :)
