Leeds United a couple of years ago, felt like I'd travelled back to the 1970's.
You forgot the woman on the Friday train who had just been released from Holloway prison and was heading home.Carlisle again (ole ole). Early 2000s with @Carrot Cruncher @Uncle Buck and various other miscreants.
Mrs GB was going to Chelsea on a corporate jolly that weekend but I preferred the delights of Cumbria. We decided to make a weekend of it so that we’d get some sleep on Friday night and not drink too much. Hmmm.
Left Friday lunchtime. Managed to stay sober until Milton Keynes, then a stag party going to Blackpool got on and sat in our carriage and drinking games ensued. Got to Lancaster, our stopover, quite hammered, checked in and found a pub selling dirt cheap booze. After that I can’t remember the exact sequence but a statue was climbed and a curry house nearly set on fire. To this day I can’t remember anything between leaving the curry house and waking up in the B&B due to my mate’s snoring. We then took turns waking each other up with mutual snoring.
The next morning, after a tactical vomit, I realised I had alcohol poisoning. We had a whole Saturday to get through and the only thing I could drink was water.
The game was a dire 0-0 that I can remember far better than the Friday night. On the way home I had four hours next to The Cardinal who was in full on Tiffany mode. I was still sober.
When we got to London I got a cab to the hotel at Stamford Bridge, stayed the night and morning with Mrs GB and we both headed home at lunchtime.
48 hours, some minor criminal offences, an incredible amount of alcohol, staying in a rival team’s hotel and no goals.
Great trip.
That Blackpool Game gets my vote as well. Freezing cold and watching Jamie O'hara score a free kick from 40 yards. Recall a coach issue at one of the service stations as well meaning didn't back to Southwick until well into the early hoursI'd say Carlisle twice but we made long weekends out of those trips so I'm not sure they count.
For what were long travel days I'd also go the Cardiff 4-1 defeat, 5.30 am start from Brighton; The City Arms didn't open at 11 so had to make do with Spoons; absolutely p*ssed it down on the walk to the ground; noon kick off and we had to play into a force 10 gale where we could hardly get the ball over the halfway line; 3-0 down to wind assisted goals at HT; get a goal to get back in it early second half; Knockaert misses a sitter for 3-2 nd we then concede a penalty.....FFS. Then an interminable rattler journey home. A completely terrible day out and to think we could have watched it on TV!
My second nomination would be a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday (Leon Best in the 90th minute or something like that) when there chronic roadworks all the way home, motorway closures everywhere and the coach didn't drop me off at Seven Dials until just before 4am. Happy days.
You might as well chuck Blackpool away on the coach on one of the Christmas/NY holiday games. Enjoyed the Oysten out protest before the game. The match it self utter sh*t, another defeat played on a ploughed field. Thoroughly depressing.
This seems to apply to the locals too. When I went there I made good time and arrived before my room in the hotel was ready. “But come back after the match and it’ll be ready”, said the nice lady on reception. At which point I realised: I hadn’t mentioned anything about being there to watch football nor was I wearing anything football-related. Perhaps harshly, it’s clearly the only reason anyone ever visits there.ending up in Burnley is no one's idea of a holiday.
