What if it were Leeds, Millwall or Cardiff?

As I stood on the bridge in the relatively short queue to catch a train towards Lewes, I looked down on the literally thousands of people queing for a train to Brighton, the queue was a mixture of the blue of the Albion and the red of Donny Rovers. The Donny fans whilst obviously crestfallen were well behaved and there still seemed plenty of banter between the two sets of fans.

However, it crossed my mind, what would have happened if we had beaten Leeds, Millwall, Cardiff or a number of other Championship sides, with their full allocation of 2,500 fans, with a goal in the 98th minute.

How are the fans going to segregated when we play teams with a reputation. I can't see that you can keep the away fans in the ground when it takes the best part of an hour to get the home fans onto transport and part of the club's strategy for easing the burden on transport is to ask the home fans to stay in the ground and carry on drinking.

I'm sure there must be a plan. Any ideas on what it might be?

Did you ever go to the Goldstone ? Did you ever try and get on a train at Hove Station following a game ? Do you think we never played those three teams there ? The normal procedure is to hold back the travelling fans until the home fans have cleared. We even did that on occasion at Withdean.

they will keep them back a bit to allow some home fans home, then stop the home fans gettin to the train for say a half hour while they marshal the away fans to station. just like they do for any other town where they expect trouble and have thousands to deal with.

that and use of evening games, were the away fans will be using car and coach to have any hope of getting home that night.

Who's plan is that then ? Yours or that of your imagination ? Frankly with Palace we should pen them up for two hours just to show them what it's like.

Anybody who starts aggro anywhere near the ground better get prepared for jail. Police will probably allow one major kick off and then use cctv to convict the offenders and hand out jail sentances as a warning to ensure people will think twice before starting !

People do seem to get obsessed with the idea that the majority of football fans are going to be kicking off. There were 20,000 there yesterday, what percentage of that number do you think would be remotely interested in starting a fight, whether with Leeds, Palace, Pompey or any other club? It's tiny.

Believe it or not, the same principle applies to all clubs. The overwhelming majority are simply mad keen football fans who want to watch their team. Hundreds of thousands of football fans mingle at every club, every week, without any significant issues. You get more trouble in West Street on a Friday night. I know that won't please those who love to think it's still a massive thing, and I'm sure they'll all crawl out of the woodwork to swarm over this like they always do, but football matches themselves are very rarely the source of trouble these days. Any issues are more likely to be in town.

Besides, the police and stewarding presence at a Cat C game will be that much higher, what kind of idiot is going to try and start something?

I'm quite happy to mingle with Pompey fans, or Palace fans after the game. I shall relish the opportunity to tell them how crap their teams and stadiums are and what an embarrassment they are to the Championship. I'm confident I won't be getting a smack for that

I suspect they might escort away fans to trains/coaches straight after the final whistle so they are cleared out quickly, leaving the home support to drink and be merry in the concourses etc as per yesterday. If it's done efficiently, you could have all the away fans gone or at least not near the home supporters within about 15 minutes or so.

Whilst i agree-especially on the extra police on duty for high profile matches-such matches will bring perhaps if not fighting, maybe a more "obnoxious-rude" attitude from some away supporters.

I can't see them holding back the travelling fans until 7pm! The home fans are now encouraged to hang around after the game for a few beers before leaving!

That's the answer-hold back the Home fans-spend spend spend-think of the transfer kitty.open the away gates 15 mins before the end.

That would be a great idea - however a few game sin and you'll get the usual people leaving 5 minutes before the end etc

I would imagine there'll be less tolerance from policing at the sensitive fixtures.
This will mean selecting out any potential troublemakers BEFORE the match.
No tickets for fans with bans, arrests for those breaking banning orders.
IF they make any problems at any time - round them up and give them bans, which will preclude them attending at ANY matches anywhere - or even lurking close to stadiums.

This may run to people making trouble at pubs or antisocials in general.
Make ticket bans from public events the norm, if they earn any record of antisocial behavior.

It's 'big brother' and social ordering - but personally I have no problem with that.
