WHAT DOES IT TELL US?

11:00 - 18 November 2004
Don't get me wrong, Steve Claridge as a footballer was always a real deal, but the sight of him lasting 89 minutes of his debut for Brighton in their 1-0 win at West Ham last weekend left me dumbfounded. Claridge is 38 years old, he last appeared in a Football League match two-a-half years ago and he had since divided his time between the player-managership of Nationwide South club Weymouth Town and a midweek job as a radio pundit.

His winning tilt at West Ham was the 695th senior appearance of his 20-year career and he walked straight into the Brighton first team only a few days after joining them.

What does that tell you, not just about the Seagulls, but also about West Ham and the quality of the Championship?

For goodness' sake, no wonder most Premiership sides are packed with Carlos Kickaballs.

I think the standard of the first division is higher because of the number of foreign players in the top flight.

How many teams in the old second division would play nice passing football, say 20 years ago?

Football is getting better all the way down the leagues IMO.

The standard will get wider and wider while the premiershit get all the money and pay stupid wages for pre maddonas

I love the championship it a lot stronger than our last visit which shows how we have improved as a team.

whilst we have defientaly improved since our last season in "the championship" I believe the division is weaker this time round. The division has a number of good teams but no teams that are going to consistantly boss other teams week in week out.

Surely that shows the overall standard has got better if no one team is going to run away with the league?
