WHAT DOES IT TELL US?

Don't get me wrong, Steve Claridge as a footballer was always a real deal, but the sight of him lasting 89 minutes of his debut for Brighton in their 1-0 win at West Ham last weekend left me dumbfounded. Claridge is 38 years old, he last appeared in a Football League match two-a-half years ago and he had since divided his time between the player-managership of Nationwide South club Weymouth Town and a midweek job as a radio pundit.
His winning tilt at West Ham was the 695th senior appearance of his 20-year career and he walked straight into the Brighton first team only a few days after joining them.
What does that tell you, not just about the Seagulls, but also about West Ham and the quality of the Championship?
For goodness' sake, no wonder most Premiership sides are packed with Carlos Kickaballs.
