Everyone likes to be snobby about Wetherspoons but I have found in my local ‘spoons just beer and drinks at affordable prices and very acceptable food served by decent bar staff . What’s the problem, do you say “ oh no, I want to pay more for my drink” ?
Another pre-conception about Wetherspoon's is that it is a haven of all day drinkers. Doubtless there are some, but certainly only a small minority - I popped in to my local Wetherspoon's for breakfast last week only to find the place almost empty (which it certainly usually isn't). The reason? No food because the kitchen was closed all week for refurbishing.
Later in the week I popped in for an early evening pint - and again footfall was down by at least 50%, probably more. A couple of weeks ago I stayed in a Wetherspoon's hotel (excellent room and view by the way); the pub was well filled all day - until later in the evening after they stopped serving food. Again, suddenly the pub was more than half empty.
The beer is good, as well as cheap, and yes, people do go there to drink, but I do wonder if their footfall isn't at least as much dependant on their food as the drink - and of course old men who want to go in there chat with their friends in the warm all day only have to pay £1.71 for a cup which they can refill with unlimited tea or coffee all day!

I find the ambience/clientele (by which I mean the OTHER customers , not me!). of a Spoons varies by branch to a surprising degree.

But I do know that the range of beers is better than any other pub I've ever been in and I don't think I've ever had a pint that's been off.

I posted previously on The Leading Light' spoons in Faversham.
Faversham is a mix of middle class and rather poor and simple folk.
There is one estate that is awash with drug dealers, unlicensed teenagers tearing about on little motorbikes,
and people screaming 'she's not worth it' and 'I'm gonna fuckin kill you' late in the evening.
Unfortunately the cheap booze attracts the estate dwellers, and those others not put off can expect to be threatened by the locals (Bob and I were asked outside by three separate oaves ten years or so ago, when we were mid 50s and early 70s and minding our business).
So my anti Spoons stance is influenced by my local experience.
I accept that elsewhere the ambience is likely to be better.
(The owner remains a dick head, though).

In the video I posted, he visits multiple Wetherspoons while travelling across country. And stays in Wetherspoons hotels, which I never knew was a thing.

Your first point, I agree with entirely. Some of them are fine, some of them are really studenty, some of them simply aren't very nice for whatever reason.

Your second point suggests to me that you really need to get out and try some different pubs. :drink::drink::drink::drink::drink::drink::drink::drink:

If you mean that stuff that comes in pesky little 330ML cans for the same price (or more) than a lukewarm pint at a football stadium, I'll stick. to Wetherspoons thank you. Those little cans are often crap anyway. Cheap beer with a squeeze of orange juice, and maybe a soupcon of hand ground pommegranate pips.
Drinking those is a bit like customised number plates - it's God's way of telling you you've got too much money (and in some cases that you're just a tad pretentious too). :)

Quite. All this beer talk is making me thirsty for a cheeky schooner of west coast hand crafted APA.

If your Spoons is nice, take full advantage.
If its shite like mine....

I have learnt, from this thread, that not all Spoons are shite.
That is schooldaytastic.

Seriously, if your 'Spoons is as bad as that, write to Tim Wetherspoon - you might be surprised at how the top business man who supported Brexit will respond to that, considering how committed he is to providing a good product. Entrepreneurs with an ear to the ground, whatever next?
Try it - you might seriously get a better 'Spoons (and the large number that I've sampled are).

If you think 330ML of that is a better deal for your money than two decent pints at 'Spoons, go for it!
Quality, not quantity my friend.

No, I mean places like the pub down the road from me with about 6 hand pulls and 8 keg taps (none of them generic stuff like carlsberg or whatever) with most of the cask stuff at the £4.50 - £5.50 mark.

Overpriced! £2.79 or over (3.00 if you exclude 'Spoons) to £4.00 here; hand pulls, and straight gravity from the barrels for cider. Enjoy your life up norf in the affluent zone!

To be fair, Darlo is pretty fancy in parts. :lolol:

Seriously though, if it were some generic stuff like Greene King IPA or Ruddles or something I'd agree it's too much, but it isn't, it's all good and varied and interesting. What and where are you drinking for £3 a pint?
