I'm still confused where this notion that 'Manchester United has done more for English football...' bollocks has come from.

I certainly haven't noticed any major benefit of Manchester United's European run on Brighton & Hove Albion. Or Millwall. Or Scunthorpe United. It's not as though European money has trickled (let alone flowed) through the domestic leagues. It has all stuck to the sticky fingers of Europe's biggest clubs.

Similarly, their success (or lack thereof) in Europe has not helped the England national team either. I do remember half of the England team being made up of Liverpool players - but that was in the late 1970s. Apart from that, it just sounds like jinogism, based on a club's location, rather than its roots.

f*** 'em. Well done Manchester City for upholding certain principles. Why should they hand any advantage they may hold back to their opponents purely because they asked for it?

erm....

put English football on the map?

Probably THE most famous team in the world?

As I said, gets kids interested and I guarantee there are Brighton fans who grew up watching United and other teams in the premiership and Europe and asked their parents to go to a football match, their parents took them to see the Albion and they are still going!

Agree?
I think even you will find it hard not to!

Put English football on the map? Are taking the piss, or a history revisionist? Preston North End, Aston Villa, Burnley, Notts County, Accrington Stanley etc - they put English football on the map. Manchester United? NO. It's not as though they were the first big team after the war either.

They probably are the most famous team (or brand) in the world, but that has f*** all to do with putting English football on the map. Who else benefits from Manchester United's popularity and fame?

Kids are interested in football, full stop. You CANNOT credit Manchester United alone for attracting kids to football. The fact that they see Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea etc on the telly week-in, week-out often has the desired effect of making kids support those teams - not necessarily their own local team.

So no, I do not agree. Your argument is shallow and full of holes. And they certainly DO NOT deserve preferential treatment, especially when (a) they already get it and (b) it is at the detriment of other sides.

Hadn't thought if it that way. And you're probably right, if it hadn't been for Man Utd Champions League games in the mid 90's, i probably wouldn't be here now!

I think ultimately you've got to look at some of the quality players they've produced for England as well:)

Adolf Hitler put fascism on the map, and was probably the most famous western leader of the twentieth century.

But it does not mean that I would vote for him.

......and forgive me if I am wrong, but didn't the World Cup in 1966 put English football on the map?
