It is. I don't want a witch hunt though. I want David Beckham to say 'I was very poor and not fit to play. I shouldn't have played.' I also want Sven to at least say 'I made some poor decisions, we shouldn't have sat back on 1-0 and maybe I made some poor substitutions' If there is any criticism of players within the camp, then you are right, they should keep it behind closed doors.

I don't want our players and management to be so fearful of defeat that it adversely affects them, I just want us to learn from what went wrong.

Yeah and then the press will crucify him. Bobby Robson used this approach and I have never seen anything like the witch hunt they had for him. I think they have got it spot on, keep all these things in the dressing room as it is none of yours or my business and as long as we get the results in the qualifiers then so be it.

Of course it's our business! They are our team, they represent our country, we are where the money comes from!

We shouldn't behave unreasonably but we should demand standards.

BUT THEY HAV'ENT GOT THE RESULTS. THE TACTICS HAVE PROVED TO BE WRONG. EVEN THOUGH SVEN KNEW HIS SIDE HE CONTINUED WITH CHANGING THE SIDE IN FRIENDLIES EVERY 20 MINS. INSTEAD OF GETTING HIS MAIN SIDE USED TO PLAYING WITH EACH OTHER, DEVELOPING THEIR TACTICS IN A REAL ENVIRONMENT.

IF I ****ED UP AS MUCH AS SVEN. I WOULDN'T GET TOMS THROWN AT ME. I JUST GET THE SACK..

The original post exaggerates the extent of the abuse the Italian players were given.

For a start the plane touched down first in Milan and most of the squad got off there. There was, apparently, a fair crowd in the airport but not to insult them. Many were people waiting around for charter flights.

Most of the players sneaked out the back exit leaving Alessandro Nesta to face the crowds.

The plane then went to Rome to take home the Rome based players. Most of the abuse was reserved for Francesco Totti and it seems that it was almost entirely from Lazio fans who wanted to take advantage of the situation to have a go at the Roma captain.

While I don't condone throwing things at people, there is a good point in Adrian's argument.

To get better you need to learn from your mistakes. England show no signs of doing this. We went out of the the last World Cup because we were tired, gave impetus to the opposition by being unable to pass to each other and played an unfit captain. We went out of Euro 2004 for pretty much the same reasons. And I reckon it'll happen again because we haven't learnt.

I wholeheartedly agree with your viewpoint.

You can escalate the problem all the way the Prime Minister somehow if you really want, but the basic fact of the matter is that the manager and footballers on an average wage of, say, £50,000 a WEEK didn't do basic things, like keeping fit and stringing more than two passes together, and as a result limped pathetically out of a competition that had a pretty good chance of winning.

I'm pretty certain the scenes in Italy were mirrored in Germany, Spain and France, yet over here the media decide to hound a Swiss referee and blame the penalty spot. Don't get me wrong, Mr Meir is still a **** of the highest order for not giving the goal, but if England had played like they could and should have done it wouldn't have boiled down to a decision in the last minute because we'd have had the game wrapped up long before then.

I too don't agree that aggression is the answer, but to simply say to our squad "hard luck chaps, you did all you can" is pathetic and sends out completely the wrong message.

You can say "it's only a game" but when they're on the sort of money they're on, in the priveleged position that they are in, it goes way further than that and they deserve a bit of grief when they f*** up.

This thread is GAY.

Nobody is really to blame for us going out.

Tactically Sven did okay, the France game was a execellent until the 91st minute, we beat the Swiss easily and looked extremely confident in the Croatia game which we won very well (after they had put the shit up the French).

I didn't see the Portugal game too well because i was stoned out of my brain but if that German TWAT of a ref had not called foul on a quite obvious goal then we would be in the semi finals of the competition having knocked out the hosts on their turf with a very good chance of making the final. Limped pathetically? No. Hard done by (the old fashioned English way)? Yup.

Don't get me wrong, Beckham still played like a ****.
