It’s not just google maps, a lot of sites go by Wikipedia, we are the 16th biggest city in uk but get overlooked because of this.

I'm quite happy with it as it is. Although I prefer 'town'. I have never thought of Brighton & Hove as a city. I still go 'up town'. That will never change.
