Note sure how Oatway would have fared tonight - it was an ideal opportunity handed out by MM to his midfiled fringe to show their worth - "claim your place". Nicolas could have bossed the midfield (but didn't). Carole and Jarrett both had moments of quality but the final ball was never quite there. Hammond was solid and Knight steady. Carpenter was the worst I've ever seen him - but will MM stick with him and Oatway as LI expects?
I must admit even 'unflappable' Andrew Hawes was a little confused by Mark McGhee's substitution.. bringing off, from Hawes' commentary our liveliest player Carole, a right winger, for Albert Jarrett, a left winger, reshuffling your midfield accordingly, amazingly it works, and then looking steady for your win you sub off the player who changed the game, for a midfielder who is widely considered to be in a poor run of form, you reshuffle your midfield AGAIN, nobody knows who they're marking, and then you lose.
I'm not sure what exactly went wrong, but I must say this defeat was concerning.
New central midfielder signed on loan before Preston game - you heard it here first.
Oh yeah! We looked good in the middle third of the park - lots of possession and pretty triangles - but no-one was creative enough to open the lower division side up ....
