[Albion] Was this peak Potter-ball?

A lot being made about Bayern having 31 shots against Auckland - and winning 10-0.

Reminded me that we also had 31 shots in a game (a near Premier League record, I think) - and, of course, failed to score.

At home v Norwich, October 2021. 31 Shots, but just 4 on target. 0-0 draw.

Was this the most Potter-esque result ever? Those two games against Palace one season when they barely had a shot but came out with 4 points from the two fixtures must also be up there.

Do you mean this one?

We had a decent enough line up out.

The 1-0 loss away to WBA with those two missed penalties and a cretinous referee disallowing a perfectly legal goal for no reason definitely a close second
This was definitely the height of the “head in hands” games under Potter, for me. The fact they had Allardyce in charge too (scoring with a header from a giant CB) and were scrapping down towards the bottom at the time just added to the bingo card.

The two I remember, were the Leeds at home game, which from memory resulted in the booing and the history lesson jibe. We were proper crap in front of goal that day

Then there was the all time worst. Palace at home, complete domination ended by a ridiculous smash and grab in stoppage time. I'm still livid over that.

The thing that really damns Potter, is that by the end of his time here, the club had got him a bloody good team. It's fair for him to point the fairly ordinary players we had when he arrived.

I'm much happier with the situation now. Yeh, we ship a load of goals, but we try to score and commit men forward and have the balls to risk defeat to win

31 shots and 4 on target, Peak Potter ball indeed.
It seems impossible though. In attack that team had Welbeck, MacAllister, March, Gross, Trossard.

How can you get so little from an attacking line up like that?

And I get that every side will have a off day in front of goal, but these were regular occurrences at the time

It isn't about the quality of the attackers, it's about the quality of the chances those forwards get,

Potterball was all about slow patient build up.
Our xg for that game was 2.8 from 31 shots.
One of those was a missed penalty.

That takes it down to an xg of 2 from 30 shots.
An average of 0.066xg from each shot.

Welbeck, MacAllister, Trossard, March aren't the type of forwards, you would bet the bank on, putting those sort of chances, away on a regular basis,

Pretty sure this was literally the next game after losing to Palace at home, despite completely and utterly dominating them, as they scored with the only 2 touches in the box their players managed - the second in the ~95th minute.

The aforementioned Palace and West Brom games which I believe were in the same week as each other. Two utterly dreadful sides managed by two old school ugly managers who had clearly sussed Potter out.

There was also the Sheffield United game which was one of the few games that season to have a crowd. They were one of the worst teams in PL history, went down to 10 men then took the lead and then we needed a last minute equalizer

That 95th minute goal, seared on my memory - maybe false recollection but I refuse to watch it again - is that the ball was going out and Ben White hoofed it back into play to set up the goal. I'm sure it was something like that, that made the manner of losing even more unnecessary and avoidable.

yeah he was definitely involved in the build up.
Can't remember exactly how.
Like you, I'm not keen to revisit it in any detail.

My fiancé has a video of me somewhere, sitting alone in our front room in April 2021, head in hands on the phone to my Dad, saying I just can't keep watching this. It's not that bad when you're around people, sharing in frustration, but there is something intensely lonely about having to sit through what was some pretty abject performances on your tod.

The game was a 1-0 loss at Sheffield United, a team who spent 0 games outside of the relegation zone that season and were bottom for 30 games, at the end of a run of three scoreless games in a row where we'd taken a remarkable 51 shots. We plummeted to 17th with 5 games to go and it really felt like we were taking quite a massive step backwards. If you want to be reminded of one of the worst goals we've conceded in the PL, watch at your own peril. In large part due to lockdown, it was a real low point of supporting the Albion for me.

Whilst I'm no fan of Glow Up, I am not particularly interested in rewriting history to say that that was peak Potter. He had some fabulous moments; Arsenal (a), the dismantling of Mourinho's United (h), playing fast flowing football where we actually did score a few goals! He also had some quite long monumentally shit patches that I'd rather forget. Ultimately, he was a good fit at the time, and now we're far far better than his ability could command.

That goal includes monumental f&%$ ups from no less an experienced combo of Webster, then Dunk (although that's a tad harsh), followed by Veltman and Pascal to top it off.
