having only ever known the albion play in blue and white stripes it looked odd (as it always does) to see them play in plain blue on the '101 greatest man u goals' on sky 1 last night during the 1983 cup final. but there must be many of you on here who remember the albion ditching the stripes, and then taking them up again. what was public opinion at the time? were people not outraged when the home colours were changed? i know i'd never vote for anything other than the stripes and i can't imagine ever watching the albion play in anything else.

Although Stripes is part of Brighton and always will be I have to admit that the British Cal shirt was one of the nicest the Seagulls have ever had:clap2:

It was plain blue with white sleeves in the late 60's and then went back to the stripes but I don't remember any outcry.
The colour (shade of blue) was the same - now we have the stripes but a colour change.

It was the Albion kit I ever had and it was the best thing in the world to me at the time (I was a kid)

The cup final kit was a slight move back to stripes wasn't it ? Had a white pin stripe with a V neck.

The shiny flappy collars kit before was the stripe free one...

I'd like to see the blue shorts back personally.

Me too. The kit from the last year at the Goldstone was my favourite Albion kit by some way. Most excellent third kit too; the "Inter" stripes.

Weren't so narrow minded in those days. Broaden the stripes, I say! We are not a supermarket bag!

Ernest - what kit did we wear at Newcastle in 83 in the 3rd round cup replay - I know we wore yellow when we won promotion up there - if I remember (and I was only listening on the radio) we were defending for 90% of the night and wardy got the winner.

What colour was our away kit that season? Purely out of curiousity.

Yellow with blue trim as in the FA Cup Semi

For some reason, it had Airways added to British Caledonian

To answer the original question, I don't think there was an outcry at our kit changing from stripes to all blue as fans just didn't have a say in those days, it's hard to imagine now but really the only place you could read what was happening to the Albion was in the Argus and the limited coverage on local tv so things had already been decided before you even got to hear about them normally.

And of course replica shirts weren't the big business that they are today so I don't think club's could care less whether fans liked them or not. Also, you have to remember it took a brave person to wear a shirt to an away game in the early 80's as you ran the significant risk of getting your face rearranged by some yob. Ahh, those were the days...

I've always had a soft spot for that 'Arsenal' style kit (blue body, white sleeves) as it was from the era when I first started going regularly. I also liked the 'Real Madrid' kit that replaced it (see Ernest's post), which is one of the reasons I've ordered one of the special-editon white shirts.

If we ditched the stripes and went back to either of those kits I wouldn't complain. Didn't really like the B-Cal one though, although I think I've still got mine somewhere.

I'm sure I remember us being sponsored by Townsend Thoresen back in the mid-80's but can't remember the year and have never seen a replica shirt?

Oh yes, if only I could find (and hopefully squeeze into) one of those beauties. I'd even consider getting a perm to top it off.

From what I've read on here, they had huge ad boards in the Goldstone, might it be that you're remembering?
