What an absolute load of tosh. Robinson had made a string of great saves before the first goal. The second took a huge deflection off a divot as he went to kick it, totally blameless. If anyone should be blamed its Neville for not playing the back pass wide of goal, but it was one of those freak things that happens from time to time, to blame Robinson for it is moronic.

There is NO WAY a 'Sven' team would have lost as badly last night. Ok it was only 2-0 (and one of those was a freak) but Croatia carved us open at will, it was only Robinson that stopped it from being 5-0. Even with our defeats under Sven I don't think we were ever out-played that badly.

Sven would have been ultra-cautious, ultra-defensive (especially with a slightly weakened team) and would have ground out a 0-0. And he would have then got slaughtered for it.

For a change MotD did some decent analysis of the system - and pointed out the downside of its implementation with the players involved, and what happens to the defenders when they are unused to playing it.

Also - after a poor performance - you go back to basics.

Yep it was that bad, Mclaren is Svens clone we all know that.

Thats why it was so important we got a fresh face in, same is happening at the Albion sadly.

Blown it on both fronts sadly.

I totally agree with your second point, but I think your first is a bit simplistic. McClaren has prided himself on being his 'own man' and has tried his best to distance himself for Sven - exiling Beckham being one example. Last night appeared to me to be a hideous compromise of McClaren 'own man' thinking and too much Venables input.

C'mon Easy, where are you?

McLaren seems to be a continuation of Sven, and it's not surprising given he was his No. 2.

If the FA were serious about winning trophies they would have ensured either Scolari, O'Neill or Capello took over. The choice of McLaren is beginning to look like Knight's appointment of Tinselhead.

Neville and Robinson should share the blame for what was a freak goal. My first reaction was that Neville should never have passed the ball back directly towards his own goal, but Robinson was far from blameless - or did he think he was playing on a bowling green?

But what was he supposed to do? It took a HUGE deflection off the divot - you'd have to kneel down in front of every back-pass to make sure that couldn't happen. He had to put his boot through it, and can hardly legislate for the ball moving a split-second before he made contact.

Robinson was the only thing between us and a thrashing last night.

It was a crap pass by Neville, so the thing to do to avoid DISASTER was to trap it and boot it. Granted he wouldn't have got the distance or accuracy on it, but that is the price we *should* have paid for Neville not back passing it to the side of the goal. Either way, Robinson has to be sure he's going to make that kick.

The fact that most goalkeepers would have done what Robinson did last night doesn't make it the right thing to do.

Blaming Robinson really is the worst kind of straw clutching. As others have said he made countless saves to keep it at 0-0 and without the gaff we would still have lost 1-0.

Or does anyone out there actually think we would have scored but for the own goal ? :jester:

Well I've been thinking this morning and I've decided that Terry, Lampard, Gerrard, Cole, Ferdinand, Chuckle Brother 1, Chuckle Brother 2, etc, far from being a golden generation are the worst load of DROSS we've ever had. They make Carlton Palmer, Sammy Lee, Geoff Thomas, etc, etc look like WORLD BEATERS. The only reason they appear to do well at their clubs is because they're constantly being bailed out by more skilfull, technically-superior foireigners. The only reason we managed to reach the quarter-final stage of the last three tournaments was because the managerial GENIUS of Sven managed to make a whole that was so much greater than the sum of it's parts.

Unpleasant truths maybe but it's about time some of you faced them.

Apparently Easy can't get on here when at work so you might have to wait a while for the response you are expecting Brov.

Say what you will about Sven, he knew how to qualify for tournaments.

And he knew how to achieve failure once he got there as well!

Couldn't he have job shared with someone else and had a bi-annual extended summer holiday during the finals?
