A SUPERVOLCANO simmering beneath one of the planet's areas of outstanding natural beauty has been branded a threat to mankind.

The massive explosive force lies beneath America's Yellowstone National Park - and scientists believe it is ready to erupt.

The volcano is so huge that when it does blow all life will be extinguished within a 300-mile radius, leaving vast swathes of the US devastated.

(thats the good bit, however.......)

Thousands of tons of ash and sulphur dioxide will be thrown up into the atmosphere causing acid rain, blocking out sunlight and plunging the world into a bleak frozen era that will threaten all life on earth.

And scientists are warning the 'extinction-level event' is long overdue.

Professor Bill McGuire, of the Benfield Greig Hazard Research Centre, at University College, in London, said: "The Yellowstone supervolcano has been on a regular eruption cycle of 600,000 years. The last eruption was 640,000 years ago, so the next is long overdue."

I suppose if that doesn't get us, the asteroid will in 2011. Don't make any plans, eh ?

Woo hoo!

Just found my new chat up line for a reason why I have to sleep with a particular bird. "Its now or never, there's a volcano going to go off soon, so lets get down to it before the world is over" etc...

I read a book about this (and a number of other things likely to kill everyone soon, like the rock slide generated tidal wave across the Atlantic) a few years ago.

It is due, but if it happened in 50,000 years it would still be more or less on time, so don't expect it any day now.

So go to Yellowstone while you still can. It's a great place, hot springs, geysers, wildlife.
