"I'm voting for the Icelandic Volcano Party this year. They have done more to stop immigration in the last week than labour have done in the last ten years!"

:dunce:

The democratic and free EU
seems to show alot of activity going into and out of Paris and Amsterdam, have they reopened then? are we the only ones still closed?

someone at work said they say a KLM plane in the sky about an hour ago

I've seen and heard a dozen KLM planes go overhead since about 10am today (9am UK).

And none of them have crashed yet - don't know what everyone was worried about.

go ahead and book - just use ferry & train. my parents went ahead with their holiday to Switzerland on Saturday by rail.

Its to America so plane would be pretty essential!

apparently they dont control smaller airfields such as Biggin Hill, so it seems its not quite as clear cut as we are led to believe. Maybe it only applies at a certain hieght?

NATS control ALL UK airspace
However, UK airspace is made up of multiple sectors.
Every flight departure (LGW or Biggin Hill) must have an approved flight plan before departure.
The tower controller will clear for take-off and then you are passed to sector controllers. There is a seperate controll to cater for pass-thru - flights going through UK airspace but not descending or landing.
For commercial jets and turbo props, they use air routes, particulalry for approach and take-off, a little bit like air-motorways, that light aircraft are not permitted to enter NOTANS. Once clear of these, jets are at a height that most light-props can't reach and so do not need NATS control inflight.

Hope this helps.

if only there was an alternative  get used to it, if this volcano keeps going, flights wont be such a common and easy mode of transport.

Just looked out at the sky in Leeds and you can see the clouds as normal but the sky above them is not blue, its grey and also there is the optical illusion of 2 suns from the light being refracted by the ash

You are close to the zone where flights are allowed and yet down here in Sussex it is a beautiful day with a clear blue sky and yet this is a danger area to fly through. I believe the over reaction by NATS has become farcical especially when France, Holland and Germany are flying again
