Virgo On Verge Of Signing 3 Year Contract

From the back of todays Argus (apologies if this has been posted already).

"They have offered me three years and I am discussing it with my agent at the moment" said Virgo.

"We are just tying up a few loose ends and there should'nt be any problems".

"Three years is what I was looking for. I can concentrate on improving as a player without worrying about my future".

Five of Albions other Cardiff Hero's - Butters, Jones, Iwelumo, Reid and Piercy have been offered new contracts of at least 1 year.

Albion report back for pre-season training on 1st July (not much of a break then) and play their first pre-season friendly 12 days later at Worthing.

Amazing!

For the whole season the guy can't distribute one ball out of defence, then he steps up and scores one goal and is feted as some sort of football genius.

Now he is thinking about 3 years. I can't believe we're offering it to him and if I was him I'd bite the Albion's hand off.

Unbelievable.

Harsh maybe, but are you really telling me that Virgo on a 3 year contract is what an aspiring Div 1 team needs?

As you didn't bite my head off I guess even you are pondering the sense of this offer. I'm a big Dick Knight fan, but this smacks of Uncle Dick handing out rewards to the boys that have been here a long time.

I wouldn't say Virgo is the finished article yet but he is definitely a good backup for when our first choice central defenders are injured. Plus he can play in a numbe rof positions. If you ask me he is an ideal squad player and a youngster who seems to get better and better by the game.

Definitely worthy of a three year deal if you ask me.

ignoring that goal I'd give Virgo a 3 year deal as he has the potential to turn into a great defender, certainly good cover for next season (if we get in a new defender or two) and the experience will only make him stronger for when he properly takes up a 1st team role. Good stuff in my book!

That is very harsh, agreed he has been getting some wonder press since that goal but in both playoff legs and the final he looked an excellent prospect. Whats the harm in rewarding that? Say he gets better next season when up against bigger teams and we only had him on a year, he could then leave in the summer and we'd possibly lose out on a fee. I'd like to see him, Harding and Robinson tied down because they could be special and belong at the Albion.

Also that pass to Iwelumo at Cardiff was almost Beckham like!

Virgo has been superb since coming back into the side, and thats without the Swindon game. Well worth 3 years, Hamilton youve not got a clue!

It wasn't just the last minute of the Swindon game where he excelled. I think his distribution is actually pretty good (he hits some bloody accurate 50 yard crossfield balls), and he is soooo much better at defending than the previous incumbant. The fact that he's comfortable at centre half and right mid makes him even better!
Replace Butters with Virgo and let El Abd take the right back berth, I say.

I have been told that amongst others Cardiff and Burnley were after him.

Glad to see he has got a fairly long term deal.

agreed, i think his passing is superb, that one for iwelumo, as mentioned before was awesome,
he also obviously has a very strong mind, as shown in the penalty shootout, some young players might've buckle under the pressure(as shown by that mansfield kid) but he kept calm and slotted away a good penalty
i'm very glad we're offering him a new deal

Good news about Virgo.

I really rate Harding very highly and he could be the young player to push on the most next season. Certainly good enough for Div 1. I hope he signs long-term too.

Robinson is potentially the best of the lot. He can sign for 4 years when he turns 18 but for 3 years if offered now, which would be a very smart move.

I can't say I agree with some of the the comments about Virgo on here. Very harsh in some cases.

The guy has been dominant in the air, and has been brave in the tackle.

He has shown some good distribution ability, although he needs practice. That pass to Iwelumo wasn't his only good pass this season you know, I seem to remember him laying on a goal where he skinned the fullback with a lovely touch before whipping in a viscious cross.

He is a good prospect - which we knew a couple of years ago.

He is improving all the time, his passing is excellent and his crossing is good as well, witness his assist for Leon's goal v. Plymouth at Withdean.
