I just thought that Gallagher had a mare in the first half. I can't believe some think that Virgo's first challenge could've been a straight red. OK a booking perhaps but other refs have let worse challenges go with just a word. The second yellow was a joke. The tackle was a committed one from a player in a committed team. Virgo won the ball and then Breen almost jumped on top of him. When the whistle went my initial reaction was that the ref had given us a free kick. 5 minutes later a Sunderland player chopped one of ours down and didn't even get a talking to. Big club vs 'small' club syndrome?

Siros

did you even see the first one. All Virgs did was charge straight at the Sunderland player who was heading the ball and jumped into him with the ball long gone. IMHO he was lucky to get away with a booking

I think the crucial words in law 12 are

Decision 4
A tackle from behind which endangers the safety of an opponent, must be sanctioned as serious foul play

Although interestingly (!!) you cannot be sent off on a second yellow card (which Virgs got) for serious foul play. SFP gets a straight red card. he could have only been cautioned for being "guilty of unsporting behaviour"

So I am afraid Gallagher was right to send Virgo off (not what I said at the time by a long chalk) , although he got the process wrong. He should have given him a straight red rather than a second yellow.

But the challenge wasn't from behind, so I still don't see what he was booked for!

Booked for "reckless play" - haven;t got a copy of the law book so cannot give you the definition.

No appeal possible against Yellow Cards. Can only be reversed if the referee unilaterally decides to rescind it

p.s. why does every thread where there are two points of view have to descend into a slanging match ????

Have you been away that long ?.

It's because there are some you should never disagree with. The technical term is 'quality poster'.

I thought Virgo was rather reckless with the first challenge and Gallacher was clearly going to be keeping his eye on him. Maybe Gallacher could have given Virgs a final warning as it was the first real challenge of the game.

I really didnt think that the second tackle was a booking, he cleanly won the ball and Whitley was late so Virgs momentum carried him into the Sunderland player. Given that Adam was already on a yellow it was an unadvised challenge really as there is always a risk in those situations of the unkown. Didnt the ball actually go for a corner had the ref not called play back for the free kick, first time I have ever seen a corner conceded from the other half of the field.

There was a comment from a Sunderland fan on another thread saying that as soon as he saw that McCammon & Virgo were playing up front he was worried because their centre backs always seem to struggle against 2 big men. I suspect that Virgo was playing to instructions from Mcghee: 'Don't let their back line settle. Put them under pressure for every ball and make sure they know you're there.' If that was the case then he clearly overdid it, but the plan was working as they didn't look comfortable against us (as you'd expect from a team at the top of the table).

Possibly he'd have got away with it against the normal standard of ref, but Gallagher is more aware of these things.

No mention of "reckless play" in the Laws of the game.
the Law book says:

"Cautionable Officences
A player is cautioned and shown the yellow card if he commits any of the following seven offences:
1-is guilty of unsporting behaviour
2-shows dissent by word or action
3-persistently infringes the laws of the game
4-delays the restart of the game
5-fails to respect the required distance when play is restarted with a corner kick or free kick
6-enters or re enters the field of play without the referee's permission
7-deliberatey leaves the field of play without the referee's permission

Sending off offences
A player is sent off and shown the red card if he commits any of the following seven offences:
1-is guilty of serious foul play
2-is guilty of violent conduct
3-spits at an opponent or any other person
4-denies the oposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent by delibertely handling the ball (this does not apply to the goalkeeper in his own penalty area)
5-denies the oposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the players goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick
6-uses offensive or insulting or abusive language and/or gestures
7-receives a second caution in the same match

so how can he receive a second caution for an offence that doesn't exist.

Re the first challenge. I thought Virgo was retaliating for some nasty challenges he'd been on the end of in the first few minutes. They were the sort that would get the player booked later in a game, but gallegher didn't even have a word with the players involved.

I've got to say, I can't really see much wrong with the challenge that ahe got a second yellow for.

Wreckless?

It's just jargon like "professional foul" used by journalists and now referees. In Gallaghers report he will put it down as unsporting behaviour I would imagine.... used to be ungentlemanly conduct.
As a Class 1 ref and ex defender it is always worth looking at the follow through or for that matter the art of getting the player first and then the ball. It's an age old trick which is really hard to spot when you referee,
Saying that, and I am biased when I watch the Albion, I thought Gallagher could have had a word and said to Adam - last chance, any more and you're off. The first challenge was definitely late and had to be yellow. As for Whitley, I think he made a meal of it.
