Nope, even before VAR red cards could be given, penalties can be brought back after the final whistle too (very rare). If a player handles it in the area then clears, but ref doesn't see, he can blow for ft. The linesman could flag for it, speak to the ref, then it can still be given.
I’m sure you understand the rules better than me, but it just doesn’t sit right with me. The whistle should either be final or not. If that means the laws need to change then so be it. I don’t see how it’s fair in one scenario and whistle can be overturned and in another it can’t.

It's always been the way, nothing is truly final until the referee leaves the pitch.

Looking at the laws again, it may have actually been the correct decision.

A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball with the hand(s) when:
  • the ball is between the hands or between the hand and any surface (e.g. ground, own body) or by touching it with any part of the hands or arms, except if the ball rebounds from the goalkeeper or the goalkeeper has made a save

As someone else has pointed out today we have been denied Europe by virtue of Attwell and VAR's shocker in the Cup Final so I won't be shedding any tears for Villa.

Speculation we still don’t know what the final result would have been. City looked they could have played all night and not scored.

No fan of Villa, but is prefer them in the CL to a petro state
Really……

Villa is currently owned by V Sports, a company owned by the Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawiris, the American billionaire Wes Edens, and American investment company Atairos.

What an equally lovely bunch, i’ll check in a minute to see if the two sceptic’s are Republicans 🤦

I think Villa are right to feel it was a surprisingly inexperienced referee for such an important match. It seems unlikely one of the more established refs would have blown immediately. No guarantee VAR would have overturned the decision but they should have had the opportunity to assess it.

This bit might be pertinent though?

And going back to that game at home - the ref had blown his whistle for full-time, yet a penalty was still allowed to be given.......

Because the law of the game allow for the penalty to be given provided the referee hasn’t left the field of play.

Those decisions should be made in real time. The goalies always get the benefit of those ones. I don't really see what the fuss is about.

Because in one situation the handball happened before then ref blew for full time. He wasn’t aware of the handball until VAR informed him they were checking (as someone else said this could have been a linesman saying there was a handball), this came after the final whistle but the laws allow for the penalty to be awarded and taken.

In today’s situation the whistle blew before the ball went in the net, therefore the goal cannot count as the game had stopped. As the game had already stopped before the ball crossed the line VAR are unable to intervene as the goal wasn’t actually scored.

Just objectively it’s a shocking mistake and obviously very consequential. Don’t give a rats arse about Villa either positively or negatively but fair play means they shouldn’t lose out on Champs League this way. If this was us, already it would be impossible to type the ref’s name into NSC without it being turned into something else

If it was us, we'd rightly be apoplectic. Bit it's Villa, masters of the dark arts, time wasting and cheating and conning officials, so let's just enjoy it 😀
