Worthing
I thought Lamptey did well, especially first half. Slightly annoying that he seems so reluctant to go forward or look for forward passes most of the time though. Lovely delivery to Mitoma when he did though.
Not great defensively though.
Was on his heels in the first half, and anticipated very little, basically reacting to everything.

However, has always been better offensively and that is his strength.

The thing Joel has that our other wide defensive players don't have is first class positioning. It's particularly obvious in transition and recovery.

Estupinan is the counter example. Much stronger going forward, good defender with play in front of him - but in transition he is often too far away to impact the game. I feel Lamptey is better in this phase, but still nowhere close to Joel. Yesterday Southampton broke down the right and left in both first and second half, and our defence was too far away to impact the play. With better crossing they could have had 2 or 3 goals.
Exactly.
Tariq's still exciting going forward but he's still utterly lacking when it comes to the positioning & anticipation that Joel's a master of. After 4 years he still looks like a winger made to play full back in an emergency

Seriously? If I was an opposition manager and clocked the Brighton team sheet, the first thing I’d do is to tell my lot to focus on whatever side of the pitch he was playing on. Defending is the weakest part of his game
Whooooooooooosh!

Edit: I was replying to a reply to my post. The reply was 'defensively?'

So I reiterated my point defensively.

That was it, really.

This

It's easy to defend against Lamptey attacks as 99.9% (made-up stat) he checks back and makes a Stephens pass (sideways or backwards). He never seems confident to take on defenders anymore (permanent loss of his blistering pace?).

Apart from the assist for the goal, which should have been a confidence boost, he just seems more intent on keeping possession and playing low-risk keep-ball.

I don't know if we will every see the Lamptey of 2021/22 again?

Without Lamptey in the first half, with that supreme assist, we could easily have lost that game. I really don’t get the venom against him.

Not venom. Just candid assessments of a player who struggles defensively at PL level to say the least. In the opinion of some fans. Haven’t seen anything hateful or nasty.

This has happened previously, opinions that Maty Ryan and Jahanbakhsh weren’t good enough, were deemed treacherous.

Thankfully the club have acted with Ferdi as back up to Velts.

I also thought he did ok - but many of here last night were posting that he was terrible and should be nowhere near the side in future !
Which is such a weird take after he had a really solid game.

Still this is the forum that wrote off Igor, thought Rutter was way overpriced, decided that the Ferdi signing was going to replace Estupinan, seems to want to pension off Dunk, bemoaned the sale of Gilmour and assumed Ayari had no role here.

So “Velts” and Ferdi are injured, so we bring on our final line of defence: Lamptey, who provides a sublime assist, and you then lay into him as “struggling”.
