"The odd bout of commercialism". How else is the club supposed to pay its way? Tony Bloom isn't running a charity, though it must seem that way to him when he looks at how much he's continuing to pump in.

It's really very simple. If people don't want to buy merchandise, then don't buy it. But it's an important revenue stream and the profits it makes are not making individuals rich.

Indeed. I wasn't saying commercialism wasn't necessary. Just that just because the club will occasionally send out deals like this which might seem ill-timed does not mean they are out of touch with supporters or using them purely as a money-making revenue stream.
