Tedebear - imagine a double cassette deck, but with CDs instead.

Two CD bays, one plays, and one records and plays. It connects to your amp. I also have a good old turntable (Technics SL12) so recording to CD is relatively easy. There are analog (phono), digital, coaxial and optical inputs. Cost me about £200 though about four years ago. Mine's a Grundig. Phillips made them also but they failed regularly.

Not sure of they are still sold new actually now I think about it - maybe on ebay???

Ok - I can understand that! So its another piece of stereo which just sits with our other stuff...I guess downside of this is I can't make compliations on the PC though, unless I then put the CD in the PC and save it? Thats a possibility though isn't it? Can I save Audio CD's on the PC?

Yes once you finalise the CD it is a real recorded CD, just the same as you would buy, but in practice a little more prone to not working if scratched / maltreated etc.
You can rip it to iTunes or whatever.

Hmmm right thanks DRF - thats a distinct possibility!! Just off to ebay now to investigate cost...

Still can't believe I can't go out of the "audio out" on my amp and pre amp and staight into the "line in" on my PC....

You can if you get a decent separate sound card though Tedebear.

Yeah I've just discovered that - but having spent £2k on our Sony PC - I thought it already had one...

I'm thinking of going down the Audio CD recorder route now anyhow - thanks kindly to your suggestion - found a Harman Kardan one on ebay which looks the business, the USB stuff looks OK - but its another step in the singal to loose...Vinyl straight to CD - hey presto!

If I were you, I'd just keep on playing the vinyl! It sounds better than anything digital anyway.

Vinyl is beautiful :)

Vinyl is the music of choice around here indeed! Problem is some of it is very old and has become very very expensive to replace, so the CD backup is the way forward...I've even got a cataloging system going!! Sad I know

(This is going to take me years I know!!) But all for the benefit of mine (and moreso Zef's) listening pleasure...

Also Arthur is starting to love the stuff too!!

Still no easy editing/cleaning if required, that means ripping it to the PC, and hey, guess what? You've spent far longer and far more money than ripping to a PC with a decent sound card would have cost.

Point me in the direction of a decent sound card, with software that will give me just as good a signal and I may still believe it can be done! Just can't seem to get everything working currently!!

Hey ELS, Does that IKey malarkey allow you to split a mix without gaps?

If so I'll be having words with my Minidisc.

It records exactly what's coming out of your mixer (or whatever the source is) - so you could be doing a six-deck extravaganza for all it cares. No gaps.

If that's what you meant ???

CDs are compressed to the exact same level as audio I rip to my PC - 44.1Khz PCM.

tedebear - I use either Creative gear or Echo Audio external cards. As goes software, I doubt my BeOS software is much use for you, so I've no decent Windows suggestions.

Thats the sample rate, all audio is sampled at 44.100, its the bit rate that determines the quality/compression of the audio, well thats what I was taught at school ..

But that's £22 (and the cost of the recorder) and time/hassle you don't need to spend.

I can't understand how its more hassle really, you can pick audio recorders up for far less than you can for a decent soundcard :)
