Off to the states next year but have some funds available now.

My question is.

Shall I buy my US Dollars now while the rate isn't to bad OR shall I wait and hope it gets better?

It's a toss-up really. The rate from now to when you go may get better or may get worse, there's no real way to predict.

You could split the difference by getting half of your necessary currency now and holding back on the other half until nearer to your trip, hoping for a better rate than is currently available. At least then if the rate gets worse, you'll have got some 'in the bank' as it were.

It's dropped from 1.99 to 1.85 to the pound over the last month so tough choice

why not by a smallish amount now, or over the next week or so

buy euros and convert to dollars at the time would be the best punt of all.

Except sterling is now strengthening against the euro again (well not by much but it has stopped falling) and you'd be paying two conversion charges
