What a strange system when you have plave played a full season and than have to play another 10 games in a playoff league to decide who are champ[ons. Just imagine Liverpool now having to play another 10 games to decide who has won the PL
Yeah.
USG have finished top at least once and then lost it in the playoffs.
Hoping they can get some justice this season.

They are getting rid of the playoffs after next season and increasing the number of teams in the top division to 18.

It’s now thought the current system of a 30 game regular season, then 10 in the playoffs plus cup games and then extra games in the revamped European competitions will be too many games for the top Belgian sides.

The playoffs were originally introduced to increase the number of games between the best teams in the division in the hopes it would make the sides better and in turn give them a better chance in Europe. As the Belgian league has gone from around 14th in co-efficient rankings to around 9th (and increased the number of Champions League spots available including the Champions now getting automatic qualification to the league stage) it appears to have been a success.

It will be interesting to see if Belgian maintain their current ranking when they revert back to a traditional league format.

I think they will. Due to external investment they now have a "big 4/5" similar to the EPL. If another large club (for example Standard Liege) get some funding then they should all keep themselves competitive.

Such a strange set up Genk at end of season finished 13 points ahead of Union and have lost 4 on trot in playoffs. Those that finished 5th and 6th at end of season start playoffs 10 points behind with no chance

You say they have no chance but last season Club Brugge finished 4th and were 19 points behind USG at the end of the regular season which meant they started the play offs 9 points behind. Brugge went on to win the whole thing by a point after picking up 24 points in the playoffs.

Interesting Still think that would be a one off. Brugge finished 4th. The sides that fininished 5th and 6th this season really did have little chance and just playing for the income.
I dont think Liverpool would be pleased to have to now go through a play off league to before they can confirm there status.
Anyway as someone has mentioned there will be no play offs next season

Partially I guess it is about whether you're really conceiving of the end of the league phase as the end of the season as a whole. The playoff round is just as much part of the season as the league phase.

It's not an equivalent to our promotion playoffs.

Having said that, I don't like it. The way the points are halved means that the first two thirds of the season don't matter as much as the last third, and frankly it's just needlessly complex.
