The haven’t won the league though. The play off determines the winners of the league and European qualification, the regular season games determine what advantage each team takes into the Championship play offs.

Their theory was it would increase the number of matches between the top sides each season and hopefully improve teams by playing more matches that had something riding on them and eventually lead to better performances in European competitions, it remains to be seen if that theory comes to fruition.

It’s been in place since the 2009-10 season. I haven’t looked to see how well Belgian sides have done since then in European competitions to see if there has been any improvement.
