Sorry to hear that mate. I hope things improve for you. I'm in a situation where my company is stable but realise that they could employ someone cheaper than myself to do the same job. Hence I am always looking over my shoulder. The insecurity this employment situation brings is awfull. Wish you well.

Stay positive mate! I was made redundant twice in the last 2 years (one got away with out paying me 2 months money, holiday) Now in the best job I've ever had. Lovin it and glad all that shit happened but it was scary.
So keep focused and don't let the bastards grind you down!
Good luck

Insecurity is awful.

I freelance. I'm at a great company right now but there was a time I was working day by day, that increased to week by week and now luckily I'm booked up until Christmas but I feel for you. It is really really scary having this job market looming over you and a Government that simply doesn't care.

To be fair, it's not just this Government which doesn't care. Maybe I was just the unlucky one, but the last Government in 2009 didn't care either, when I was out of work for the first time, just insisted on wasting my time making me apply for jobs I wasn't suited for and which I didn't have any chance of getting anyway. They offered nice pretty green sofas in the job centers, and lots of rules for us naughty citizens without jobs, but no constructive help at all.

Well if it was bad then, the rules just got stricter..

Thanks guys...

Lots of similar problems here, trying hard to develop a business whilst looking up options elsewhere...though after 61 applications and only three interviews its all a bit poo!

I hate the whole 'too qualified' schtick as well , but I guess that comes with age!

Still at least the Albion is cheering me up.

Well go on the cards then. You can't demand a contractors wage and moan about job security. You'll be moaning about not getting paid for holiday next!

I understand your predicament but you need to see it from an employers point of view. If you are doing a task that is "professionally" below you then your heart isn't going to be in and you'll probably jump ship at the first given opportunity (although it doesn't sound like there are too many of them about from what you are saying). It's expensive to employ a new body what with agency fees and then the time lost on training the person.

Out of interest you don't speak Dutch do you? I've got a role going but it's kind of a requirement.

You are totally right about that point of view...seriously...have a job I wish to do at the end of November, just want to do something / anything till then!

Alas, I don't speak Dutch!

I didn't mind employers saying I was 'overqualified'. What I despised was them calling me to interview to tell me so. One wasted morning/afternoon at an interview where they had discounted me before I turned up roughly equated to the time it took to fill out two job application forms.

I always thought there is no excuse for calling you to interview to say you are overqualified. They know your qualifications beforehand and therefore shouldn't waste your time or theirs by inviting you to interview.

Of course I never told any interviewers this, because I'm much too nice and not the kind of person to burn bridges.

What do you do, Billy ?

Mainly Fundraising and Marketing, but really into Event Management. Have a very varied CV combining many of those jobs, but really happy to consider anything in the interim...

Whilst this is all going on, I am trying to develop a voluntary project with a few sporting contacts...an event experience.

To that end if you are around Bristol on Thursday 18th November, and work around the centre pop along to BSB, Corn Street for a meet and greet with a few Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

Will put you on the guest list in recognition of your long service to NSC!

Really Arthur you know nothing of the industry I work in or the wage I demand. I am on a contractors wage (not a freelancers) and yet I have all the downsides in regard to job security etc the way the TV industry is at the moment everyone I know is in the same boat. Very very very few chances to 'go on the cards' as the money isn't there and companies are paying freelancers less because competition for work is so high. I'm not in a position to change industry but thanks for the understanding words.

I need a job if anyone has anything going.....and my situation is not for the want of trying, after what seems a million applications, a few interviews where I probably stood no chance for varying reasons, it does (and has) knocked the confidence.

My problem is, my CV is basically full of Private Housbuilding management background, that industry has all but had it for a long while, and any prospective employer (in other work enviroments) looks at my CV and says, why do you want to do this? the answer is easy.....because I need a job and need to pay my mortgage!!

And yes, as others have said, overqualification does come into it when your applying for say a driving job, they see the CV and think your not being serious, and the application gets discarded, and it's even worse as most employers are going via employment agencies nowadays, even for jobs that require no qualifications, the application gets discarded again because the CV shows no background of that sort of work.

Also "Ageism" most definatly exists!!

It is difficult out there at the moment, so if anyone needs a reliable person to do almost anything, I'm your man.....oh and I have my own transport :lolol:

All types of work considered

Onwards and upwards
