Who are you comparing us to? I think it's only fair and sensible to compare our economy to the big industrialised euro countries and the quote below from three days ago suggests we are doing shit-house compared to Germany and France and Russia.

"a growth performance that has seen activity declined in five of the past seven quarters and made Britain the worst performing country in the G8 group of industrialised countries, apart from Italy."

Most certainly we are. In France at the moment and their new government is verging on the lunatic with a policy of public spending and tax increases that would beggar belief in any sane person.

It has to be attrition and cuts, for all. Not nice but there is no alternative. Get debt and spending down and then look at a policy to re-inflate the European economy.

Of the G8 nations, we are SEVENTH, with only Italy performing worse.

Yet we have the joint highest credit rating of the G8 with only Canada rated equally. Curious.

UK - AAA Stable
Canada - AAA Stable
Germany - AAA Negative
USA - AA+ Negative
France - AA+ Negative
Japan - AA- Negative
Italy BBB+ Negative
Russia BBB Stable

Hardly comparable economies. And I have probably got more money down my sofa than those 5 put together.

because the credit rating agencies work on the basis of how likely we are to default. we aren't. the recession doesnt alter this, we can still pay the interest and the capital on any Gilts that mature.

Retail has suffered badly which is always on the cards in a recession as people spend less.

There are a lot of companies stashing money waiting for the turn in the economy so they will spend heavily then.

The French might be at the heart of the Euro and all the financial pain it is bringing them but the one thing they are not afraid of is to employ a raft of protectionist policies to help their industries. They'd probably do even more if they could afford it.

Meanwhile it is not entirely surprising that the UK is in a double dip given that the Coalition's efforts at stimulating the economy have yet to take effect and seem too ponderous to bring about a dramatic improvement. Banks don't seem to be lending the sort of money to allow growth and the timescales for major public spending projects are a couple of years away. Some of the big job losses in the public sector have yet to really take effect so with many more looking for jobs there isn't exactly going to be more spending money or income from taxes to help stimulate things -potentially the opposite and the associated spending on benefits instead. The coalition needs to stop fannying around with gimmics and PR disasters like the pasty taxes and start doing some pretty radical things to kick start the economy.

I used to think it was highly cynical of Ed Balls delighting in talking down the economy and scaremongering over the last few months but now the coalition are actually starting to make Balls seem half competent, which takes some doing.

This.

And the economy is now smaller than when the Tories took over. Good work Gideon.
