Armed forces numbers could be bolstered by a form of National Service for folk appearing by boat on a daily basis.

Whilst their application is processed, it would be a fantastic way to show commitment to this new land, at the same time building confidence and skills.

Yeah, brilliant idea, take illegal immigrants with absolutely no skills or training and limited vetting, possibly not fluent in the language, and give them access to a f***ing nuclear submarine.

Absolutely genius idea

A good interview here regarding this announcement from a former SSN Commander Ryan Ramsay, a great guy btw.

NHS in crisis, UK defence in crisis, lost control of our borders. At what point will our political parties join the dots and realise we are f*cked outside of the EU?

I know it is boring beyond words, but that lost 4-5% of annual GDP is killing us.

Right now, we can't afford to be a nuclear power and maintain our nuclear threat. We behave like we can, we still talk the talk but we cannot walk the walk.
IMHO I think absolute economic necessity will ultimately lead us back to the EU in some form to meet our defense needs...and they are very real needs.
The hardcore B brigade won't like it.. but as you say, where is another 4-5% GDP coming from? I agree with Ed Davey.. but it needs to be more like 4% GDP defense by 2030. I don't think the baddies are going to wait that long until we're ready. Whatever ready means.

I hope Starmer realises how long it takes to build Hunter Killer Submarines, currently it’s taken an average of 10 years per sub for the Astute class, they need to get that down to 5 years or perhaps dare i say start acquiring or building Diesel electric again

I caught the tail end of an interview on 5-Live this morning with someone who seemed to know what he was talking about. He said that the UK effectively has a "hollow army", that might look good in parades, but is currently drastically undersourced in terms of munitions. The factory capacity in the UK to produce an adequate supply of bullets, missiles and projectiles simply does not exist any more, and in the event of us being involved in a major conflict, would run out "within days".

So thats reassuring.

With regard to manpower for the forces, the Royal Navy should be alright.

As MSM keep telling us, ad infinitum, there’s boatloads of fighting age men arriving in the country on a daily basis, all with seagoing experience.
Could be something in this. At present illegal migrants/would-be refugees are being cooped up in hotels that don't want them and they don't want to be in, with the very real possibility that after a number of wasted years they may well eventually be repatriated anyway.
So, offer a deal; serve 7 years in the armed forces and that will earn you UK citizenship (like we should have given the Gurkhas).

I think you'll find that the usual procedure with all recruits to the armed forces is to take them in unskilled and untrained, and then provide the training for them to acquire the necessary skills. I'm not sure where the rather stupid suggestion that we'd just march 140 of them into a nuclear sub and tell them to get on with it comes from (or the idea of just giving them a rusty rifle and shoving them into the front line; we're not Russia you know).
