And his target is a realistic one, indeed one the government agree on - Davey is just saying it’s a bit more urgent than the PM’s choices suggest, and I agree with that. Reform have no costings or actionable plans.
Even my local Green Party leader agreed that we need to spend more on defence when I was chatting to him about his in the pub the other day. I think all the serious parties agree we need to spend more even if I expect they'll all disagree on where the money comes from.

I hope you both enjoyed your Hemp craft IPA and crisps made out of, I dunno, basil…

Always money for new weapons but never money to look after the most vulnerable in our society.

Same as it ever was.
Without defence spending there may not be vulnerable people left in society to defend. Some of us have seen this coming for years - the Tories completely dropped the ball.

I'm probably being facetious.

There's plenty of money to do both if you tax people properly and are efficient with the spending, but only one of those two options gets people's dicks hard.

More people out of poverty, more people are healthier, more people are more productive, tax intake goes up, GDP increases, defence spending increases.

NHS in crisis, UK defence in crisis, lost control of our borders. At what point will our political parties join the dots and realise we are f*cked outside of the EU?

I know it is boring beyond words, but that lost 4-5% of annual GDP is killing us.

Right now, we can't afford to be a nuclear power and maintain our nuclear threat. We behave like we can, we still talk the talk but we cannot walk the walk.

You can build all the shiny new ships and toys you want, but manpower is a major problem. Retention levels are shocking, with a major factor being the substandard accommodation and services that have been allowed to develop since management of this was outsourced.

Unless you create the conditions where people feel comfortable enough to have more children you'll run out of young men to send to war also.

Maybe if HMGOV is being serious about this shit and not just showboating, then maybe they should consider recommisioning many of those former serving armed forces members currently being forced to live on the street or in dire circumstances through little fault of their own

Which is why they have said they will spend massively on military accommodation.

Even if we can afford the actual kit that has been planned, 12 new nuclear subs don’t come cheap, upwards of 2 billion a piece, plus a lot more billions in maintenance and support etc, where is the manpower going to come from?

We already have a shortfall in recruitment in all 3 services, will we have to re-introduce conscription in some form?
I speak from experience when i say even if the Royal Navy increased its personnel (each boat will require 100ish crew on top of x2 crews of 140 for each of the 4 SSBN’s ) with this manpower requirement they will have to ‘press gang’ new recruits into joining the Submarine service (currently most volunteer for the xtra pay) which produces problems as normally you either want to be a submariner or you don’t, having someone on your crew who doesn’t is a real issue.

Yes saw a recent report they are struggling to crew the subs we already have.

Must take a very special kind of person to undertake a tour of duty on a submarine. Most folks are going stir crazy after less than a day on a plane

The guys on the SSBN’s (Trident deterrent patrols) are the ones i feel sorry for, in my day they would slip silently out of Faslane and disappear for no more than 8-10 weeks max fully submerged the entire time, fast forward to last year and one of the boats stayed on patrol for 204 days!!!!

At least the Attack Class subs have port calls to look forward too
