Thought after many years thinking about it, I'd dip into the non Windows world at home.

Been playing around with it on other machines and thought I'd finally try and get the thing installed on my laptop.

Think there are a few things wrong, and will probably need to buy a book. Bit of a hassle to set up, but in summary a revelation. My machine is suddenly running very well....

I have been using Ubuntu on and off for about 5 years. About 2 months ago I finally took the plunge and I am now using it as my main machine.

The key to success is to not throw in the towel when things do not work, Ubuntu make a very good job of finding all hardware for you these days. You have probably already used ubuntuforums.org, if you need help in the future, someone will and can help you. Ubuntu Forums

If you need Dreamweaver and Photoshop and some other apps, you can install an application called wine-doors via the terminal.

Wine-doors

I am running Dreamweaver 8 and Photoshop CS 8 without any issues whatsoever. In fact I would go as far as saying that they are running as well as they did in Windows, or you could install virtual box. If Windows is really necessary you coould go dual boot.

Linux is the future, especially on old machines. It uses so much less space that it's like having a new computer. Viruses also become a thing of the past.
