And this place can give a clue to someone's age and character ...

What do YOU remember seeing at the Continentale?

Rosie Dixon Night Nurse (late seventies)
The funny thing is the films I saw at The Continentale used to be shown on Friday nights on the German satellite channels (Sat1 and RTL) in the mid 1990's  Today they would be considered as very soft porn.

History says that the destruction of the Regent Cinema and Dance hall was the greatest act of vandalism to entertainment in Brighton. The state the Astoria has been allowed to sink to is a disgrace also. The Curzon was swallowed up by Waitrose in Western Road.
Know it's not a cinema but the Hippodrome is another shocking story.

Then there was The Embassy along Western Road, where The Jam played on 15th. April, '77

I saw Watership Down there....I think.

Interesting that that story has moved on, and John Lewis is not lined up for a spot in the development.

We don't need another bloody supermarket in Hove either. I'm for the development in principle but will campaign against any supermarket getting involved.

Now that is a stunning photo! Has even got the railway viaduct in the middle left area! Takes me back probably thirty five years!

What do you reckon to that Lord B, as a possible 'improvement' to the Vague gyratory system ???

I'm sure if they put it back to how it was, buses, cycles and cars would get on just dandy

As it happens, I had a brief conversation a few months ago with one of the planners involved in developing options for the Lewes Road scheme about simply reverting to a road layout that allowed two way traffic on the eastern side of the petrol station (and making the western side an access road to Sainsburys and the petrol station). It would certainly be better for cyclists. I don't think they'd considered the idea at all - or, if they had, they'd rejected it.

A layout like that would, of course, need a second junction to be provided for traffic coming out of Upper Lewes Road into Lewes Road. That might create a new congestion problem. And I'm not sure how traffic would get out of Sainsburys.

Anyone remember the ABC, then Cannon in East Street?

Wow - this takes me back! My second ever proper job was working as a trainee cinema manager here. Spent one very happy summer doing not a lot of training but spending half my time watching films and the other half on the beach - I left as soon as they wanted me to do some actual work managing staff.

It was an incredible building inside - very tardis-like as because only a bit of it was used for the cinema/public. There was this massive ballroom that hadn't been used for about 20+ years or so, maybe longer - it was like film set itself, cobwebs everywhere yet still filled with faded finery like expensive curtains and interiors -I used to wander in there every so often and it felt like I was going back in time, proper spooky haunted house stuff, I expected pre-war music to suddenly start playing every time I ventured in there.

They have recently knocked down the old Granada cinema in Portland Road, Hove. A tidy art deco building in its day but left to rot as a bingo hall. Saturday morning pictures for us kids in the early 60s after they converted the Odeon (another good art deco example) at Hove Station to a bowling alley. We found a way through the upstairs toilets onto the roof and walked around. Health and Safety?

B&H needs more cinemas, I can't think of any other city that has so few screens. In fact the Brighton - Worthing stretch is a bit of cinematic desert...

Really? For a city our size we do quite well I think. 2 existing multiplexes, 1 arthouse and 2 more arthouse screens about to open. Plus numerous arts centres showing films throughout the week and free films on Sundays at the library. That's pretty good if you ask anyone.

There is only really one supermarket in hove at the moment and even that tesco is a pretty small one. The co-op is little more than a corner shop.

Are we both talking about the Co-op at near the dog track? That's pretty big.
