I have turned it off and on again.

I have Panasonic TV and a Panasonic DVD. Not Blu-Ray but a afairly high spec one. Both bought earlier this year.

Both have integrated freeview and this works Ok on the TV.

With the DVD the channels do not always fill the TV screen, usually the main channels (BBC, BBC2, ITV, Channels 4 and 5) are Ok but its anyones guess what aspect ratio the others will be in. For example Sky Sports News always projects in 4:3.

Now before you say it yes I always watch the TV thru the TV tuner but it is only when I want to record something on the DVD that I get irritated as it comes out with bars each side of the screen.

The TV is connected to the DVD through HDMI cable.

Any one experienced the same and got a solution?

Thanks

It sounds like you have the picture format on your DVD player set to Autoformat rather than 16:9 or whatever

i have the same set up, I believe you can "fix" the size or let the TV intelligently adjust for you picture, in its the uncomprendable massive books we were given with the tv and dvd.

Right here, right now
Check the system menu of the DVD player - should give you the option to specify the output format of the DVD player, choose 16:9

Sky Sports News is transmitted in 4:3.

People/everything being made 25% fatter is FAR more annoying than black bars - your system is behaving correctly by not letting you use Stretchyvision. Anyway, the TV should let you stretchyvision the playback from the DVD player, most have a button that looks a bit like "[ [] ]" for that.

The big plasmas down my local don't have the TV picture formatted properly.
It doesn't matter a great deal, but it does mean that when watching Soccer Saturday, you can only see the top couple of pixels on the vidiprinter that gives score updates at the bottom of the screen. So when a goal update scrolls up from the bottom, you have to try to work out who the teams are (you can see if its a home or away goal cos the scoring team is always in RED).

I soon got to recognise the top pixels of the Carlisle v Brighton goal updates easily though, being as we were getting DICKED.

It's the fact that you are recording something on a DVD with a panasonic DVD recorder that's the problem. I've got the same problem and it's something you will have to live with.

For some reason, DVD recorders do not always copy the "flag" or pulse that instructs the TV to stretch. Essentially the TV just assumes the picture is 4:3 unless instructed otherwise.

There may be a way round it, and could be something to do with the format of DVD we are using - but it's a common known problem wit panasonic DVD recorders.

If it's one of the models with a Hard Disc drive, you may also experience the other problem of the programmes sometimes being transferred from the Hard Disc to the DVD with the audio slightly low.

This is a wierd fault and all the technical people I've spoken to can't understand how it can happen.

When watching a channel through the DVD tuner sometimes it shows as 4:3 and sometimes as 16:9. I was watching a relatively modern american TV Drama on 4:3 when it finished, the adverts were then on 16:9 as was the next programme. This is not a major issue except when recording onto the HDD or when wanting optimum sound performance as the sound system works through the DVD and not the TV.

Knowing that you experience the same issue and have been unable to finsd a solution gives me some form of closure on the matter such that I will not pursue Panasonic needlessly.

Do you mean copying from a TV channel to HDD then copying frpom HDD to DVD?

Looks to me like it's working perfectly, adjusting the size depending on how the different programmes are broadcast.
