TV/Blu Ray/Home cinema Question

We must have some clever bods on here that know how this should work ...

I have a new LCD TV, and a Blu Ray/Home Cinema set. TV works fine. When I turn the power on the HC system, the sound drops out of the TV. Secondly, when I play a disc, I only get sound in two of the speaks.

So, my question is, how should this lot connect together properly. I have HDMI from HC to TV, and Scart from Sky to TV .... should the HC be hooked up to the Sky box ? When I bought the HC, I was given an optical audio cable, but I don't know what it connects (there's no obvious correct input on the HC box).

Ta muchly,
/td

I'm not saying this is the answer, but from my experience using my system check the set up of the blueray/HC, if the audio is set to PCM you won't get surround sound, so change it to bitstream. I'm not sure why the sound on the tv goes when you turn on the HC, again this could be something to do with the HC set up, obvious I know but you might want to read the manual again to ensure all is connected correctly.

Depends what outputs you've got your various systems set to, and what mode you're selecting on your HC system. And yes, I'd say your HC speakers system should be linked directly with your Sky box.

My Surround Sound all links up with my sub-woofer. I have an Optical lead going from my PS3 (for blu-ray) to the woofer. I have a coaxial cable going from my Sky+ box to my woofer. So on my Surround Sound controller, I have to select 'Optical' to activate the 5.1 when watching a blu-ray, or 'Coaxial' if I'm watching something on Sky+ in 5.1.

(I generally mute the tellybox if I'm using Surround as there is a slight split-second timing differential between the telly and the surround speakers which can sound like an echo).

I now appreciate that I need to hook up the Sky box to the BD/HC controller somehow (maybe I have the wrong lead to do it).

The bit I don't get is, the BD/HC box (all in one), has the 6 speaks connections coming out of it. I would have thought, without any other kit at all (TV or SKY) that I should get sound in all speaks when playing a disc - maybe there some set up I need to change on the box.

Have you checked the settings on the blu ray? (if there's no 'set up' button, it will be on the 'menu' button (with no disc in). Go to audio settings to select the surround sound output.

Also, have you tried turning it off and on again?

:lolol: I guess someone had to say it.

I'll have a look at the set up when I get home, ta.

Sky box has to be connected to home cinema by an optical cable to get surround sound from the Sky box. Also assuming your TV is HD then you also must connect the sky box to TV via an HDMI cable to get HD picture. Scart does not do it. Sky does not send surround sound via HDMI only by Optical.
If you have never used optical cable before then remember to pull off the little clear plastic cap from each end or you will not be able to insert into the box.

Thanks, I think you have it there. Looks like I need an extra HDMI if I want HD through Sky (which I don't have at the mo), but presumably the HDMI I have is enough for HD from Blu Ray disk (which it seems to be - the picture was v.good I thought when I had a quick look at a BR disc).

So, all I need to do is attach the optical cable from Sky to HC and that should do it. I didn't look too closely at the cable I was given, but at first glance the connector didn't look like something that would fit into any port on the HC box - but now I know that's what I want, I'll take a closer look.

Re only getting sound out of 2 speakers then as others say look at your Blu Ray audio settings and select Surround Sound. Same for your Sky box. However, remember that when watching HD TV via your Sky Box many programmes are only in Stereo not Surround Sound. The programme information box will show DSS if it's in Surround. Your Home Cinema kit may only use the two front speakers if it receives a stereo signal but it may use all speakers. Depends on your HC's software.
