It sounds from one of the reports above that one of them got a kicking for his troubles from people who witnessed it, so they clearly didn't feel they'd witnessed self defence.

Milking what? I'm bemused how you can defend the actions of two lads who hospitalised an elderly disabled woman, and stole the walking aid of an old man, on the basis of provocation. By all accounts there was a police car and an ambulance at the scene so what basis have you to say the couple went to the 'local rag' before speaking to the police?
