I wonder if anybody can clarify what powers stewards have & what fans are obliged to do at their request.

1. Do you have to answer when questioned by a steward?

2. Are stewards allowed to detain fans (stop them from leaving their seat / the ground)?

3. Do stewards have the power to search fans?

4. Are you obliged to produce your ticket should a steward ask to see it?

From where I sit in Block E, I could see that the Stewards were plotting this incident well before the end of the game. About six of them were stood behind the Albion dugout for about 15/20 minutes, appearing to point at various people in the South Stand. I even thought they were pointing at me at one point for shouting encouragement to the team.

How very dare you do this. You got away with it this time but next time you wont be so lucky!

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.

It says so on the ticket:- "This ticket is issued subject to conditions imposed by Brighton & Hove Albion FC".

Controversy!

I'm none the wiser then, 2 different answers.

I'm sure clubs print all sorts of crap in their T&C's but can stewards do any more than ensure you leave the ground?

I suppose my question is if you decide to walk out without confirming your ID or allowing yourself to be searched what can a steward do to stop you?

I suspect very little apart from request help from the police, when they show up I'm guessing it's a different story.

I would have gone more with EP's answer's in a quiz.

That said, from what I saw yesterday from D block and read here, it does seem common sense, which would have solved this incident (can we call it that?) was left behind in the steward briefing room and replaced with, if you see anything, blow it out of all proportion, wind up anyone, cause maximum disruption.

I think that's challengable (is that a word?) If the t&cs imposed are deemed to be unfair, they can be struck out. Preventing someone from leaving the ground when they've done nothing wrong would fall under this surely.

I believe at Loftus Road they don't open the exit gates until half time. The season we sent Forest down, a Forest fan was allegedly told he couldn't leave before half time so he just walked onto the pitch and was promptly removed from the ground.

Does anyone know if the same stewards will be used at falmer? Surely we can't have the current idiots ruin the falmer experience for home and away fans.

The same stewards will be used at Falmer and will earn an extra 20p an hour. Am I correct in saying that by 2012 they will all have to be SIA certified ?

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Stewards should be armed, and be given powers to shoot to kill.

That should stop all the pathetic wannabee hardmen.

Those stewards incite trouble, I wander what the clubs directive's are to them, maybe the club are wrong! I have often thought about that. Steve the Mouth is very well known, he is very passionate and a lovely fella. Shame on the club if we loose him.

I do wander if most of the hassle with stewards at Withdean is because they feel they can dish it out due to the ground being so small, thus making it easier for them to single people out (unless it Leeds or Millwall in the away end).

It will be interesting when we move to the amex to see whether they are so keen then, especially if we do get crowds of 15,000 or more? I have to say in all the years we have been at Withdean, I don't think i've seen many worse examples of stewarding anywhere else.

Actually, according to the Stewards Handbook and training Clippedgulls answer is correct.

No - it's given to all Stewards at the beginning of each season.

Are all FL stewards given the same handbook or do they vary club by club?

I watch matches at 4 or 5 different clubs & I've noticed a big difference in the way the stewards treat fans from club to club & even differences from stand to stand in the same ground.

They cover all the standard regulations that cover all league grounds but the handbook is also specific to the ground in question. So, for example, it covers the law on being drunk inside a stadium which covers all stadia but also covers the emergency evecuation procedures for Withdean which, understandably, are ground specific.

Thanks for the definitive answer.
