I thought Southampton manager has a good point in saying teams that have called off games for covid reasons should not be able to play January signings in rearranged games. Obviously thinking of Newcastle who could be much stronger by the time they play them in the rearranged game

Valid point, but little scope to change the rules mid-season.

It is a completely fair point, that we have discussed here on many of the threads relating to Newcastle, and to CV19 postponements.

Newcastle (and others) gaming the situation, clearly.

If you start not allowing January transfers to play in re-arranged games then people will complain that players who were injured or due to be suspended at the time the game was first scheduled shouldn't be allowed to play in the re-arranged games either. If Southampton's new owner suddenly funds the signing of Virgil van Dijk and Harry Kane then Ralph Hasenhüttl will soon change his tune.

And do we really want to be forced to leave out our new £40 million pound goal machine when we play United and Spurs.

And when they do, you do the :schelotto: and win.

Well clearly, if a game is originally postponed because of the numbers of players suspended or medically sidelined, then the squad would still be short on the rearranged date, if they were again barred from playing. You could literally never play the match. With a suspension, the player (like Bissouma missing Brentford, because our game at United was called off) will have already missed one game - you couldn't expect them to then also miss the rearranged game.

Adding additional players who were not registered to the club at the time, is really not the same thing at all.

I was making the point that people will still find ways to claim the playing field isn't level between when the game was due to be played and when it actually is. We are missing Bissouma because the Chelsea game has had to be brought forward through no fault of our own, Dunk might have been fit for the originally scheduled date too and we'd have had the whole of the transfer window to try and improve our squad, but we are just going to have to get on with it.

Besides which this isn't Ralph Hasenhüttl taking some noble stand in the name of fair play, this is him being worried about his side getting a thrashing, tells you all you need to know about the man. No wonder they've lost 9-0 under him twice. If the boot was on the other foot and it was his side with a huge transfer budget to spend you wouldn't hear a peep out of him.

When we had the Covid break and they changed the amount of subs you could use, teams that had catch up games were allowed to use the new amount of subs. I guess there has to be a starting date for these things otherwise you open up a Hornets nest?

I think we should add that rule! So if the player wasn't at the club on the original fixture date, they can't play in the replay. But we also need a second rule added; that is if a player has been sold in January, they are loaned back to the original club so they can compete in the rearranged fixture. Same with any managerial changes that happen between original and re-arranged. The old manager has to come back for the day.

I mean, if we're splitting hairs we may as well do it properly!
