It seems to be a general assumption that there are no alternatives to the NHS, the system that used to be called the "envy of the world", other than the US model. There are and we should, but it’s US healthcare companies that have been lobbying and fighting their way in to what they believe to be a lucrative untapped market over decades, so it would undoubtedly be a US style system we ended up with. It’s dreadful and inhumane and people die in pain and debt because of it.
