When I think of bands that John Peel played over the years, Led Zeppelin and ELP are not ones that come to mind. Did he ever play them?

He's an old woman, and his weepy announcement on PRIME TIME RADIO for his wife to come back to him, was THE singular most cringeworthy moment EVER on radio.

Is that online anywhere? Other than Smashie & Nicey's version!

I didn't particularly like either of them. I know that may seem like sacrilege to fans of Peel, but he always came across as a supercilious berk, and Blackburn should have just been on kids shows.

For me it was Tommy Vance who got my ears listening to music, with Radio Caroline and Channel Radio.

I understood what Peel did but his persona had me reaching for the off button.

There used to be a joke about Tony pıcking up a hitchhiker and introduing her to his 'microphone'. I always thought it was so apt.

Blackburn claims that the music played by Peelie was not what teenagers wanted to hear, as if ALL teenagers have the same musical tastes, and ALL want to listen to manufactured, mass-produced, vacuous, repetitive, light-weight, pop muzak with inane lyrics and a choreographed dance routine which seems to have been prioritised over the music..

When I was in my teens, there were wide variations: some were into 'teeny bopper' stuff, others were into 'prog rock or heavy metal, and later into Punk/Indie/New Wave.

I always thought you were a tosser, Blackburn: know I KNOW you are.

I expect to see your poxy autobiography for sale at 1.99 in the 'To Clear' section of W. H. Smith by the end of the year, whereupon I might just purchase it solely for the pleasure of p*****g on the pages (having drunk plenty of liquid beforehand).

I think it's quite funny. Obviously shite, and I won't be spunking any reds on the book, but quite funny.

I saw TB at an 'appearance' at Volks in Kingston circa 1999. He was a twat, but utterly harmless.

In fact, thinking about it now, he's a bit Titchmarsh isn't he?

The perfect send up of Blackburn was on KYTV's Telethon when everyone hung up as soon as he said "Hi, you're through to Tony Blackburn". It was actually him in cameo too...

My thoughts exactly. Didn't Peel once describe ELP as "a waste of time, talent and electricity"?

He did.

This is the same plank who (and this is TRUE), when his wife -Tessa Wyatt - left him, played Bobby Goldsboro's 'Honey' NINE TIMES in a row on his Radio One show. What a cunt.

Still, this pull-out quote has had one effect - it's got us talking about his book, which let's face it, we wouldn't be doing if he wasn't a f***ing twat. I mean, can you name one notable achievement of his?

Plus, he has indulged the totally, low, out-of-order, utterly ****ish act of spouting this drivel AFTER the man has died, making sure that there is no right of reply. What a f***ing coward.

AND BLACKBURN'S SHOW WERE UTTER SHIT.

I'm sure I also heard he played Kool and the Gang's 'Jones vs Jones' a good few times in one show, and tearfully dedicated Chicago's 'If you leave me now' to his wife several times as well in a plea to get her back. Classy.

I love Tony Blackburn, and everything he stands for. I also love John Peel, and everything he stands for. I'd say the airwaves were big enough for both LEGENDS. Keep on rockin'. Rock on. Keep it real.

Yes, he started off the first Radio 1 programme. All you youngsters that take it for granted now, you just cannot imagine what it was like to finally get our own pop music station. The pirates were great (and Tony Blackburn started off on the pirate station)
Whatever you think of his character, he was still part of a major revolution for my generation.

supercilious berkQUOTE]

Interesting but he certainly wasn't a berk and arrogance can be an endearing quality

Agreed. I always quite liked the Eric Cantona response to Sheffield Wednesday (who must still be feeling none too clever about this) before he joined Leeds. When asked to come for a trial, he said: “I don't do auditions.”

A line recently repeated by Guus Hiddink, when approached about the England job. Doesn't seem to be working in my workplace though...

Blackburn's show in the early 70s showcased what was coming out of Motown and served a useful purpose. But, whilst Motown would have been successful without Tony Blackburn, a lot of artists would never have had careers without John Peel.

Haven't posted for a while, like to read the postings though. Still, I felt obliged to comment on this thread. Tony Blackburn is a God.

Without Tony there would have been no Smashy and Nicey, no Alan Partridge and a lesser Chris Morris. Most DJ's are utterly facile and forgettable, no one on this thread will ever forget Tony because of his monumental self-belief, unquashable ill-judged and wide of the mark social commentary and unabashed heart-on-the-sleeve twatishness. All the things that made Steve Coogans fictional character a joy to watch and listen to. But, and this is what makes this man a real God, TONY WAS THE REAL DEAL!

Just read Tony's comments about John Peel again if you don't believe me, the man is genius.

I liked John Peel, I knew him personally and he was a kind man, intellegent and 100% committed to new music. But, strictly speaking, in this wonderful business that we call 'show', JP is dwarfed by TB's unique and unbridled talent.

Interesting view and certainly a different way to see it
