I must admit, I find the whole "training goalkeeper" thing pretty weird. I'm not sure how or why it even became a thing. Why do clubs even NEED training goalkeepers (seemingly at every level)?

As far as I know clubs don't have "training central defenders", "training midfielders", "training right-backs".
Surely it's because we have lots of attacking players who need to complete training routines with a goalkeeper in place. Bart and Jason can't be in every drill, every single day. Doesn't seem unreasonable to me with squads so large these days.

For a fair bit of this season, we didn't even have "playing right-backs".

Club rate him highly as a training keeper. Likely he can earn more in that role at a PL club than dropping down the leagues. So If he’s happy with that and it’s setting him up provide for his family then it makes sense to continue with the deal for both sides.

Likely to travel to most games as part of the match day squad too as we always take 3 keepers just in case one gets injured in the warm up (admittedly Rushworth is being used in that role now Jason Steele is fit).
I'd also suspect that this choice gets him closer to a coaching career post retirement. He'll be a participant, but not the main one in every training drill under every coach in the first team. That's a massive education for the lad.

Added to that, none of us have any clue how good he actually is. He could be next in line for Bart's position, or he could be a training cone. I expect he's somewhere in the middle though.

When he left MK Dons they were just outside the playoffs, they ended the season 19th which tbh is 4 places to high IMHO.
