lets see how good a peformance todays was by comparing today's XI to our supposed strongest XI

todays side

GK:Kuipers
RB:Hinshelwood
LB:Mayo
CB:Butters
CB:pethick
ML:Jones
MR:piercy
MC:Carpenter
MC:Rehman
FC:Knight
FC:McPhee

our strongest XI(or SC's preferred choice anyway)

GK:Roberts
RB:Watson
LB:Mayo
CB:Cullip
CB:Blackwell
ML:Jones
MR:Hart
MC:Oatway
MC:Rodger
FC:Knight
FC:McPhee

not a bad result considering 7 First Teamers Out.(Oatway gets the nod over Carpenter these days I think, well, from SC anyway)

Coppell's favoured 11.

Roberts
Watson
Cullip
Blackwell?
Mayo
Hart
Oatway
Rodger
Jones
Knight
Henderson

Obviously Rehman would get in now. Although if we hadn't have had injuires we probably wouldn't have gone in for him. Possibly McPhee's start today showed a change in Coppell's thinking. Certaintly the two goals will have helped.

I'm not sure Watson would get in ahead of Hinshelwood

I agree. Watto is not a patch on Hinsh nowadays.

Hinsh has been our most improved player and at last we have a right back who can defend and has some pace. Can't see Watto getting back in unless Hinsh is injured or suspended.

Agree with that, Hinsh has been a breathe of fresh air this season, a far better defender than Watson and not afraid to go forward.

Like i said the other day most of these injuries are a blessing in disguise.

Could be a blessing in disguise, a number of younger or fringe players have come in and done an excellent job, taking us top of the table no less. The players who are now out injured will be forced to fight for a place back in the starting line up, whilst we were worried that injuries would decimate what was a pretty thin squad it has in fact shown that its strength reaches further than even the most optimistic would have dared predict.

I was a bit worried that we hadn't brought in many new faces to the squad at the start of the season, we lost Bobby who was our only proven goal scorer and things looked a bit dodgy to say the least. Then Roberts arrived and a bright young lad called Leon Knight and things started to look up a bit, but the real revellation for me has been the form of Butters and Hinshelwood, two players who have really shown that they can cut the mustard.

I have always thought that a team needs to bring in about 6 new players a season to either replace those who have left or to freshen things up a bit and keep old pro's on their toes. Our financial situation makes this really difficult to achieve, admittedly there are plenty of other teams with similar or more serious constraints. We need to rely on maybe a couple of signings, loan deals and players coming up through our youth system. Looking at the season so far should give real reason for optimism, we have two excellent new players, one in on loan, two who have raised their game from last season and a number making the jump to senior football.

Am I optimistic for the remainder of the season, too bloody right I am!!!
