While I was rushing to get my train this morning, I spotted the front page of the Argus, with a headline soemthing along the lines of "£750m and 1,200 jobs" - those probably weren't the right numbers. Jut wondering what that story was pertaining to, I can't see anuything on the Argus Site that might be related.

My guess was it could be to do with the redevelopment of Shoreham Harbour - but could be wrong.

Someone must have read it .... pretty please ?

Long Sault, actually....
Cutting free swimming for childen and OAPS is f***ed UP.

How so?

The way I see it is this country is massively in debt and cuts need to be made to start reducing that debt. Free swimming for kids and OAP's is not an essential or emergency service, therefore it gets cut.

People must realise that if they want something, they're going to have to pay for it out of their own pocket or in the form of higher taxes out of their wage packet.

Healthy people cost the NHS less. I believe that study after study has said that £1 spent encouraging excercise saves £'s in NHS costs later in life.

Are you serious ? just because people don't pay, doesn't mean it's free, it just means the goverment is footing the bill. These are NOT essential services, though it would be nice to encourage more exercise, not at the expense of paying frontline Nurses or Teachers salaries.

yes i was serious.i would have thought the free swimming for kids and oaps would have just been an open door policy,i didn't realise you had to swipe your card so the govt. pays the money.....how stupid of me.

do you know how much it costs to keep a child on life support for a day....???

And pray tell what gives you the right to tell me what I can or cannot comment on? As a British citizen who still pays National Insurance contributions to HMRC, I have as much right as anybody else.

Right wing views? HAHAHAHAHAHA.......... I'm looking at this from purely an economic perspective. UK PLC should be run like a business, where money being spent should be equal to or less than money coming in.

It's economics 101.

sydney, stop being deliberately obtuse. You know as well as anyone that swimming pools cost money to maintain, and if that is not being raised directly from revenues then it is coming, through whatever means, from government funds.

The issue around the axing of free swimming pool access is whether it is actually encouraging people to go that wouldn't normally, or merely turning what was formerly a paid-for activity into a free one. If it's the former, then the scheme should be supported, if it's the latter, it shouldn't, broadly speaking, in these times of austerity.

The original BBC article is;
BBC News - Free swims for children and over-60s in England axed

Some of the salient points are;
261 local authorities applied for the programme most of which had offered free swims to children and the over-60s but 64 of which concentrated on the over-60s.
About 138,000 extra paying customers went swimming in the first year of the scheme.
Of swimmers surveyed, 82.5% of the over-60s said they were likely to have gone anyway. Of the under-16s the figure was 72.9%.

Free swimming for OAPs and kids was a publicity stunt , central government sent out grants to local authorities which was returned after we all pay our council tax.

Sorry, Im going to bite...

The Goverment fund this, its free to over 60's and under 16's but the goverment pay for it.

They pay a certain amount to each centre participating in the scheme (which not every centre in Sussex has)

Some centres acctually make money out of it.

This was all an idea of Labour though and like others have said, you have to cut non-essential things to give money to other areas!

The majority of the job cuts are likely to come from stripping out unneccessary layers of management and admin jobs in the NHS. What hasn't been said is a lot of them will be offered work in the private sector because GPs will take over budgetary control and in effect create their own bureaucratic kingdom. Police forces up and down the country know they can make savings of roughly 10% without affecting levels of service and the same must apply to local authorities who seem to be awash with employees doing "non jobs" for ridiculous amonts of money.
