16 June - the feast of St Richard - is Sussex Day.

Not sure exactly what this means but it does sound like a good excuse to drink more Harveys.

Indeed. Happy Sussex Day everybody! I was late sending out my Sussex Day cards again and sadly this year we've got an artificial Sussex Day tree as opposed to a real one. But still it's a chance to raise a glass and drink to that glorious day when Sussex will once again become an independent kingdom.

Hail Sussex and all good men and women of this finest county. What a lovely day it is too. I shall be celebrating at the County Ground, Harveys in hand watching the mighty Sharks beat the Worzels.

The bloomin English celebrate St George's Day - but are we allowed to celebrate Sussex Day ?
Ooooh good point DKM. Even now I can sense the sneering from those traitors and quislings who say 'there is no such place as Sussex' and insist on the false divisions of East and West.

Brings a tear to your eye, day off for everyone, get down the county ground and cheer on our boys, bring Harveys, Merrydown, Sussex Spaniels and sheep.

The date, 16 June, was chosen because it is St Richard's Day – which marks the life of St Richard, who was Bishop of Chichester from 1245 until his death in 1253. St Richard is also the patron saint of bus and lorry drivers. This is particularly appropriate as every year millions of tourists arrive in Sussex by coach. The county is also the first glimpse that many air travellers have of England as they land at Gatwick airport.

Stoolball for all..

It was also the first glimpse that the Romans and Normans had.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to discover that the original Saxons first fetched up at Newhaven.

Newhaven was below them even then;

According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle the Saxons landed in 477 in the west of the county under Aelle and his three sons, and began to found the kingdom of the South Saxons (see Kingdom of Sussex). Later (491AD ) they landed at Pevensey and took the castle there.

Better class of pillaging in Pevensey Bay.

Well I've done my bit at the county ground today, going to the Dome later (not sure Jarvis Cockers links to the southdowns), where I shall partake in some Dark Star a fine Sussex Beer.

Earliest Saxon state was wedged amongst the Britons and lay between the Ouse and the Cuckmere. From little acorns, and all that.

He also wrote the lyrics/prayer that somewhat later became Day By Day from Godspell. Don't how me how I know this. I just know stuff.

You're in the quiz team then... oh wait, you already are...

That reminds me has TLO given up running the 40 Notes quizzes? We didn't have one last year and there doesn't appear to be one this year either.
