To MK Dons by road - M1 or M1/A5 ?

Just wondering if anybody knows which is quickest route to Milton Keynes:

M1 all the way, or
M1 then turn off at junction 9 and take A5

M1/A5 is shorter, but not sure how fast a road the A5 is.

M1 all the way. Always seem to get caught up in traffic on the A5 (although, I've only travelled on weekdays)

Be careful though, as there's miles of road works / contraflows on the M25 past the M40 junction and on the M1, near enough up to Milton Keynes.

You may want to consider going up the M40 to Bicester and the A road to MK from there?

We came up tonight and came this way because the m25 was closed at J20

I'll be approaching M1 from the East so think I'll take a chance on the M1 rather than drop down to M40. As long as it keeps moving it should be OK on a Saturday.
