We had our deeds sent back by Lloyds about 20 years ago out of the blue, they just appeared left outside the front door by the postman. Have them un a drawer now.

Mrs Jakarta and I live in an address on an unadopted road (actually a footpath slowly but surely widened by our neighbours).

It has been here since Victorian times as a dwelling, not at all sure we have the deeds but mortgage paid off some years ago. We bought it 21 years ago from a local Estate Agent - surely they must have the history of the house?

The most curious thing..
We finished paying off our mortgage a couple fo years ago, and have kept meaning tpo get round to thinking about the deeds. I was kind of expecting the mortgage lender (Santander) to get in touch with us and post them to us, but that never happened.

Is this something I'm supposed to follow up?
I would.

Our then mortgage lender used to have a voluntary scheme by which you paid off the mortgage less £1 and they kept the deeds as technically we didn't quite "own" the house. They later abandoned this scheme and posted the original deeds to us, which currently sit in a file in a cupboard. They do make interesting reading with the various original restrictive covenants that nobody in the street takes any notice of any more (including us).

However the Land Registry should have them on file on-line somewhere somehow.
