Tipping! Am I old fashioned?

Last week eating out at a couple of restaurants I paid the bills using cash. On each occasion I left what was obviously a tip.

This wouldn't happen in Scotland.

On the contrary some waiters must be earning huge bucks. When we were there for the two hours she was serving another 3 tables . In two hours she probably earned 350 dollars. Multiply that up and it really mounts up.

How many people shared the benefit of the tip? You can be certain that the establishment will be monitoring takings very carefully and ensuring that the backroom staff get their share of the tips. If they didn't, who would they get to prepare the meals and wash up, given the low basic wages that apply? Any front of house employee who tried to keep all of the tips wouldn't last long in the job.

Most people paying by card or not would leave a 10% tip, wouldn't they?

Obviously it depends where you go but it is all on the day. To expect 20 percent for doing your job is just not on. In Poland they expect no tips and service is fantastic.

We should get more of them over here!

It isn't rocket science, whether you are in the US or not, tip if you feel the service warranted it. End of story.

I always tip with cash after I discovered some chains do not give the gratuities from credit card payments to the staff

This, and I always tip unless service, food etc. really bad.

Different cultures, different 'rules'. You know before you go that 20% is the norm over there. Without large tips the waiters' wages are very low.

Eating out in the States still comes out cheaper than it does here, even when factoring the 20% in. So where's the problem?

And much better quality!
